Chapter 59 A Dangerous Nearness
Marcus gave a small nod. “I happened to have something I wanted to speak with you about privately.”
“Alright.”
Natalie led Lily into Oakridge Estates with Marcus following behind.
Once home, Lily went to her room to do homework, leaving only Natalie and Marcus in the living room.
Natalie poured him a cup of tea and handed it over. “Mr. Collins, please.”
“Thank you.” He lifted the cup but didn’t drink. “I came today to talk about making Lily my goddaughter.”
Natalie paused. “Mr. Collins… are you serious?”
“Since we’ve put the story out there, we need to make it convincing.” He turned the cup slowly in his hands. “Ask Lily if she’s willing to—”
“I am.”
A small voice interrupted from the doorway.
Both turned to see Lily standing there, clutching her workbook.
Natalie smiled faintly. “Looks like Lily’s very fond of Mr. Collins.”
The girl grinned, then retreated into her room, leaving the door half open.
Marcus’s lips curved slightly as he drank his tea in one motion.
“Mr. Collins,” Natalie said softly, “since that’s the case, let’s share a meal one day and hold a small ceremony. We can settle it then.”
“Mm.”
His agreement came with a rare smile.
It was the first time Natalie had seen him smile like that–sharp yet magnetic, unsettling in its
power.

The truth was, she had agreed because giving Lily one more shield was no bad thing. With Marcus behind her, even as just a goddaughter, no one in Brookvale would dare lay a hand on
the child.
“When does your clinic open?”
The question pulled her back from her thoughts.
“In about five days,” she answered with a light smile.
He nodded. “Efficient.”
“You flatter me, Mr. Collins.”
Marcus soon excused himself, claiming other matters. Natalie walked him out.
But on the steps, her foot suddenly slipped. Her body tilted backward.
Before she could fall, strong hands caught her around the waist. Instinctively, she clutched his arm, her body falling forward-
And her lips brushed against his Adam’s apple.
The world seemed to freeze.
His throat shifted beneath her lips.
Natalie quickly regained her balance and pulled away. “I’m sorry. That wasn’t on purpose.”
She glanced at his throat, then dropped her eyes in fluster.
Marcus looked at her face, though his gaze lingered on her lips.
Then his hand came up suddenly, firm fingers tilting her chin.
Their eyes locked, the tension so close it felt suffocating.
Natalie’s heart leapt into her throat. The air around them burned with unspoken heat.
“Mr. Collins…”
Her voice trembled as confusion flickered in her eyes–confusion he didn’t miss.
“There was an eyelash,” he said at last.
