Marcus’s lips curved faintly, his smile careless and teasing.

Natalie instinctively reached out, clutching his sleeve–then let go the moment he turned back.

“Mr. Collins…” she faltered, her voice unsteady, “you mean it? That night when I was drunk… we really kissed?”

“Why so nervous? It wasn’t the first time.”

Her thoughts flickered at once to that fire, when he had given her mouth–to–mouth.

But resuscitation and a kiss were hardly the same thing.

No wonder he had told her not to drink again.

Her cheeks flushed red, her face blooming like a ripe apple.

“Don’t worry, I won’t hold you responsible.” He leaned slightly closer, his tone deceptively light. “But tell me when your dear husband finds out you’re no longer untouched, what sort of face will he make?”

Natalie tensed immediately. “You can’t tell him that.”

Her hand shot out, almost of its own accord, covering his mouth.

The warmth of his lips against her palm sent a jolt through her. She snatched her hand back, forcing herself to stay calm. “Anyway, I’m nearly divorced. Better not to stir up trouble. If you don’t mind, then let’s just say… you gave me resuscitation again.”

“But a kiss is still a kiss. How could you mistake it for something else?”

Marcus’s lips curved higher, his smile sharp enough to steal her breath.

Natalie had never seen him like this.

He was nothing like the rumors outside–cold, humorless, untouchable.

“Then let’s call it an accident,” she said quickly. “I’ll remember your words and never drink again. Lily’s waiting for me. I need to make her dinner. Goodbye, Mr. Collins.”

He lingered on the steps, eyes on her retreating figure, the smile still tugging at his lips.

She was becoming… more and more interesting.

Back in the kitchen, Natalie’s thoughts wouldn’t stop circling around his words.

She had kissed Marcus.

Of all people–Jackson’s uncle.

It was unthinkable, impossible–yet her mind betrayed her with the vivid image of that kiss.

She shook her head hard, trying to fling the thought away.

“Natalie, why are you chopping vegetables while shaking your head like that? Someone might think you’re drunk.”

The familiar voice startled her. She jumped, turning to find Lucy standing in the doorway, eyes curious.

Natalie steadied herself. “No, I was just… thinking.”

“What sort of thinking needs all that head–shaking? Don’t tell me you really did drink too much.”

At the word “drink,” the image of Marcus’s lips flashed before her again. Her face flamed red.

“Of course not. I wouldn’t drink at a time like this.”

Lucy laughed. “You look like you did. Your face is as red as an apple.”

Natalie nudged her arm, eager to change the subject. “Stop joking. Let me tell you something

serious.”

“What is it?”
