Natalie’s gaze instinctively dropped to the paper.
Just one glance, and she already knew what it was.
“Why are you the one bringing it? Was James too busy?”

She reached out to take the paper, a trace of apology flickering across her face. She had asked James to handle this, but hadn’t expected Marcus to deliver it himself.
“James probably had a date tonight, so he asked me to bring it to you.”
Her hand froze around the letter.
Then she gave a faint smile. “So that means Mr. Collins doesn’t have a date tonight?”
His hand rested casually on the steering wheel. His tone was unhurried. “Without a woman, how could there be a date?”
Natalie’s lips curved faintly as she lowered her eyes to the handwritten letter.
The contents were nothing unexpected-Quinton admitting to setting up the clinic, along with a sincere apology to her.
Just then, a hand suddenly tilted her chin upward.
Before she could react, Marcus had gripped her jaw, forcing her to raise her face.
When their eyes met, she froze.
His eyes, beautiful and sharp, were shadowed in the dim light, unreadable.
His voice came low and heavy. “I said I didn’t have a woman. You find that funny?”
“No!” Natalie quickly shook her head. “How could I possibly laugh at Mr. Collins? Clearly your standards are too high. You just haven’t met anyone you like. Better to be single than settle.”
“How do you know I don’t like someone?”
Her lashes trembled.
So he did have someone he liked?

For some reason, hearing this sent a weight sinking through her chest.

“I see. So Mr. Collins already has someone in mind,” she said seriously. “Then why don’t marry her? Or at least be with her?”
She instinctively shifted to the side, and his hand slipped from her jaw.
Marcus glanced at his empty hand, then set it down.
His voice was cold, detached. “She’s married.”
Natalie stiffened.
He liked a married woman?
That was… explosive.
“Really can’t tell,” she said with a wry smile, masking her unease. “What a pity.”

“There’s nothing pitiful about it,” Marcus said evenly. “So what if she’s married? It’s just a piece of paper-it doesn’t bind two people for life. In the end, divorce still happens. You and my nephew are divorcing too, aren’t you?”
Natalie stared at him in shock, momentarily speechless.
It was the first time she’d heard Marcus speak of his personal life. She had never imagined his thoughts would be like this…
She had once wondered if he might be a solid support for her.
But clearly, he already had someone in his heart.
The wave of disappointment that rose inside her was unexpected, yet undeniable.
She didn’t want to linger any longer. With a slight nod, she made to get out of the car.
But suddenly, his hand caught her wrist.
She turned back instinctively, only to find Marcus leaning closer.
Her lips were now mere inches from his.
Her heart leapt into her throat, and the hand holding the letter trembled faintly. When she lifted her gaze, his eyes seemed to magnify before her, dark and intense.
