Chapter 82 Playing Along

Marcus gave a satisfied nod. “Mm.”

“Mr. Collins.” Natalic lifted her hand and lightly tapped his arm. “Your hand…”

His gaze shifted to where she touched him. The corner of his lips curved faintly. “What? Afraid my nephew’s spies are nearby?”

“Although we did have that… intimate accident, it was still just an accident.” Natalie looked up and smiled. “And since Mr. Collins already has someone he likes, naturally we should keep our distance.”

Marcus’s fingertip suddenly brushed across her lips. “I told you before, when necessary, I don’t mind playing along with you. My nephew’s arrogance deserves a lesson.”

Natalie swallowed. “Of all people, I shouldn’t choose Mr. Collins.”

“Choose one or another, what difference does it make?” His thumb pressed lightly against her lower lip, his gaze fixed steadily on her. “If you chose me, it would drive my nephew crazier than anyone else could.”

For the first time, Natalie realized this man had a dangerous edge beneath his calm.

“Why help me, Mr. Collins? You clearly have someone in your heart…”

“We’re family. I can’t just sit back and watch you get wronged.” His lips tilted upward. “Is that reason good enough?”

“I have no plans to deal with him for now. Thank you, Mr. Collins.”

She quickly pulled away, opened the car door, and slipped out before he could reply.

Marcus watched her retreating figure, his lips quirking upward.

Not hard to tease at all.

Natalie hurried inside and shut the door, leaning against it with the letter pressed to her chest. Her heart still thudded violently.

“Did you see a ghost? Why are you this nervous?”

Lucy’s voice startled her further as she peeked from upstairs, spotting Natalie frozen by the

door.

Already tense, Natalie nearly jumped out of her skin. “Don’t joke like that.” She glared. “Go to

bed.”

Lucy’s grin widened. “Don’t tell me your ex-husband stole a kiss?”

Natalie shot her a look. “If that happened, I’d rather run into a ghost.”

“If Jackson heard that, you think he’d come charging in with a two-meter broadsword?”

Lounging against the upstairs railing, Lucy laughed loudly.

Natalie replied evenly, “Our doorway isn’t two meters wide. His sword wouldn’t fit through.”

Lucy laughed until she could barely breathe before heading back to her room. “Get some rest! It’s late.”

Natalie gave a faint “Mm” and quickly retreated to the bathroom.

After a shower, her heart finally began to steady.

She had never imagined she’d get this close to Jackson’s uncle. Even more shocking was Marcus himself suggesting they put on an act together just to rein in Jackson.

It should have been the perfect opportunity.

But she couldn’t deny it-she lost her nerve.

Or more accurately, she didn’t dare get too close.

She couldn’t shake the sense that Marcus was far more complicated than he seemed.

The next day, the clinic’s fourth day open, Natalie wasted no time taping the apology letter at the entrance. Sure enough, it drew a crowd of onlookers.

Some patients leaned closer, shaking their heads as they read.

“So it really was intentional sabotage?”

“This doctor’s incredible. Don’t let yesterday’s mess fool you-her skills are among the best in Brookvale.”

“I even heard she’s a miracle doctor. Is that true?”

“Miracle doctor? Isn’t that a bit much?”
