When Natalie returned to the room, Victoria was leading Jackson out of the bathroom.

“Ms. Foster, where did you just go?”

Victoria’s expression was sharp with suspicion as she looked at her.

“Downstairs for water.”

Natalie’s tone was flat, her face giving nothing away as she walked directly to the bed.

“Since you’re here, I’ll leave.” Victoria turned to Jackson, her voice soft. “Rest well tonight. I’ll go back to my room.”

Jackson gave a slight nod, watching her leave.

The door shut, and silence fell.

Natalie glanced at him without expression before lying down on the bed.

They hadn’t shared a bed in a long time. Jackson hesitated, then finally moved to the other side.

Natalie had no interest in him. She turned over, closed her eyes, and willed herself to sleep.

He lay down beside her without a word.

Natalie opened her eyes and looked at him coldly.

Jackson had already sobered somewhat after vomiting.

Natalie didn’t bother arguing-she got up, went to the closet, pulled out a blanket, and lay down on the couch herself.

A cold shower dulled the restless fire in his body.

Even in bed, sleep didn’t come. He lay awake, straining his ears for sounds from the next

room.

But there was nothing.

Across the house, Victoria lay awake as well.

The only one sleeping soundly was the man beside Natalie.

The next morning, when Marcus rose, Natalie was already gone.

Jackson sat at the breakfast table with Victoria and Aiden.

“Uncle, come eat.”

Though tension lingered between them after last night, Jackson still called him over.

Marcus ignored the invitation, asking instead, “Where’s Ms. Foster? Why isn’t she here?”

“When I woke up, she was already gone. Probably went to work early.” Jackson’s tone was dark, his face drawn tight.

Marcus gave a small nod, silent, and walked out the door.

In the car, he pulled out his phone and dialed her number.

At the clinic, Natalie was busy treating patients, too overwhelmed to notice her phone
