Because Natalie couldn’t reveal her identity, most of the clients buying her jade pieces worked through Lucy; they had shared that unspoken understanding for years, which was why so many clients had never once seen Natalie’s face.

By the time Natalie wrapped up her work, it was already eight in the evening. She had just locked the front door of the medical clinic when she caught sight of a familiar silhouette leaning casually against the Maybach parked out front.

Her gaze landed on the man’s face; for a brief moment, she froze, her mind flooded with images of their kiss the night before.

She stayed rooted in place as Marcus strode toward her, his steps confident and unhurried, until he stopped right in front of her. “I called you this morning. Why didn’t you pick up?”

His voice snapped her out of her thoughts. Oh, right.. that.

“I was swamped today, and then something came up. I forgot to call you back,” she said evenly, though a quiet tension coiled in her chest.

“About last night—”

He didn’t get to finish.

“Mr. Collins,” she cut him off sharply, her tone calm but firm, “I told you last night–let’s just pretend it never happened.”

His expression shifted, something unreadable flashing in his eyes.

Those striking phoenix eyes of his looked even darker under the muted glow of the streetlight.

“Didn’t you want a divorce?”

“I do,” she admitted. “But not like this… especially not with you.”

The rest of her words died in her throat; her lashes lowered as she looked away.

The warm, honey–colored light spilling from the streetlamp outside the clinic softened the sharp edges of her face; her long lashes cast delicate shadows against her cheeks.

Marcus took a deliberate step closer, closing the distance between them.

“He can sneak out in the middle of the night to see that woman, but you can’t?” Marcus tilted

her chin up with a firm but careful touch, his gaze steady. “Maybe this will send Mr. Gabriel’s blood pressure through the roof, but it’s the fastest way to get your divorce.”

“Even if I did it that way, it can’t be with you.” Natalie’s clear eyes lifted to meet his, unwavering as she said, word by word, “I don’t want you, Mr. Collins, to ruin your name because of me.”

Marcus studied her quietly, his gaze lingering on her lips before curving his mouth into a faint smile.

“And if I said,” he murmured, eyes locking with hers, “that I don’t care?”

Natalie’s heart lurched violently; a rush of unease shot through her chest.

She hesitated for only a second before saying with quiet finality, “Since you already have someone you care about, don’t get dragged into this mess; no sense in letting it drag you down with me. I’ll handle my own problems.”

She instinctively stepped back, and before he could respond, she turned on her heel and walked away.

The truth was, she had thought about it before–how Marcus could have been her safety net, a way out.

Maybe that was why she hadn’t kept her distance from him from the very beginning. But that day he had made it clear that his heart already belonged to someone else. And if their secret ever came to light, they would have to face the fallout together.

Until the divorce was finalized, she couldn’t risk letting the world see any trace of intimacy between them.

Rumors were brutal; she knew that better than anyone.

Before she went to prison, she had nearly been drowned by the tide of public outrage. She had no desire to relive that nightmare.

When Natalie got home, she spotted a figure standing by the front door from a distance. Lucy was there, holding a jade piece, about to unlock the door.

“Why are you just getting back?” Natalie asked curiously as she walked up, taking the piece from her hands.

“I left this at the office when I came home from work,” Lucy explained. “After Lily fell asleep, I went back to grab it.”
