James was driving, his gaze flicking to the rearview mirror where he caught a glimpse of the man in the back seat, brows drawn tight for just a second.
Marcus lowered his voice. “Yeah.”
“So? What did she say? Did she agree?”
Hope sparked visibly in James‘ eyes; his tone brimmed with anticipation.
“No.” Marcus‘ voice was cool, detached. “She said, for personal reasons, she can’t take on any orders for now.”
“You’ve got to be kidding me. Is Harley really that hard to deal with? Everyone in the industry says she’s easy to work with; doesn’t seem like the rumors match the reality.”
Marcus turned off his phone screen, his tone dropping even lower. “Keep looking while we wait; don’t put all your eggs in one basket.”
“Understood, Mr. Collins.” James tightened his grip on the steering wheel for a moment, then exhaled. “I’ll ask around again.”
Marcus gave a brief nod, leaned back against the seat, and fell silent.
“Mr. Collins,” James spoke again, voice quieter this time, almost cautious, “there’s something I need to report.”
“Go ahead.”
Marcus didn’t open his eyes, his tone distant, detached.
“Cindy’s scheduled for execution in three days…” James didn’t say the word outright, but continued, “Do you want to see her?”
Marcus slowly opened his eyes but said nothing.
“Ms. Adelyn is arriving in Brookvale tomorrow,” James added after a pause. “She couldn’t reach you, so she called me. She said she’s planning to visit Cindy the day after tomorrow… to see her off. She asked if you’d like to come with her.”
Marcus‘ gaze darkened, his eyes fixed on the window as the city blurred by.

Adelyn had been his childhood friend. She’d moved to Canada with her mother when she remarried ten years ago; two years ago, she’d married a Canadian athlete and rarely returned to Brookvale.
Back when Marcus was building his business overseas, they barely saw each other.
Cindy, though, had been Adelyn’s closest friend. Before Cindy got married, she’d often tag along when Adelyn came to visit; over time, Marcus and Cindy had grown familiar too.
Three days from now, Cindy would be gone. It made sense Adelyn would come back.
“Mr. Collins?”
James‘ voice came from the front again, pulling Marcus from his thoughts.
Marcus shifted his gaze, cold eyes flicking toward him.
“Text her,” he said evenly, his tone devoid of emotion. “Tell her to meet me at Sonata Bay the day after tomorrow. I’ll with her.”

“Yes, Mr. Collins.”
The next day was a weekend; the clinic was busier than usual, patients coming and going without pause.
Natalie was swamped, barely keeping up, when her phone rang–Lucy’s name flashing across the screen.
“Natalie, that friend of yours from prison… she’s scheduled for execution in two days…” Lucy’s voice faltered, then steadied again. “Do you want to take Lily to see her one last time?”
The words hit like a bolt of lightning, leaving Natalie momentarily stunned, her pupils dilating
in shock.
Lucy had sharp instincts; as a journalist, she had ways of getting information fast.
The only reason she knew this so quickly was because Natalie had asked her to keep tabs on Cindy’s situation.
She’d known this day would come–just not so soon.
The thought of Lily, so young, about to lose her mother… a sharp ache clawed at her chest.
“Natalie? Are you listening?”
