Natalie instinctively lifted a hand and pointed toward the door, her gaze icy and sharp.

Jackson’s chest rose and fell with restrained fury, but not a single word came out.

He turned and strode toward the door, but just as he reached it, her voice rang out from behind him.

As for what happened that day,she said, her tone cold and cutting, I expect this to be the last time it’s brought up. If Mr. Jackson insists on mentioning it again, I won’t mind having a little fun. If it comes down to it, we’ll burn together.

Jackson froze midstep.

He turned to look at her, and her eyes were even colder than before. When did she start standing up to me like this?

She had always been gentle, softspoken; if he told her to go east, she’d never think of going

west.

The door slammed shut with a sharp, echoing sound as he left.

The noise rattled the room, sharp enough to make the quiet air feel brittle.

When Natalie stepped out, Jackson was already gone from the lobby.

Atlas glanced toward the door where Jackson had disappeared, then turned his gaze back to Natalie.

Taking advantage of a lull between patients, he walked over to her, stopping just in front of her with a worried look.

Natalie, he didn’t do anything to you, did he?

Natalie lowered her eyes, her voice cool and distant. No.

Atlas hesitated, studying her for a moment before asking carefully, Did you two have a fight? Your eyes lookred.

Her lashes lowered without thought.

She hadn’t cried because of Jackson. She had cried because of Cindy.

She patted his shoulder gently, then walked back to the consultation desk, leaving no room for further questions.

Atlas watched her retreating back, unease twisting in his gut.

Something about her felt different todaydarker, weighed down. He could swear he saw real pain flicker behind her eyes.

Since weekends kept her busy at the clinic, Lily had been staying with Lucy.

When Natalie finally made it home, Lily was sitting crosslegged on the balcony, quietly building with her blocks.

She glanced at Lucy, who was lounging on the sofa, and lowered her voice. Did you get the approval?

Yeah. 9 AM tomorrow,Lucy said, her tone steady but soft. I tried to get the ten o’clock slot- nine is too early, and the drive takes at least forty minutesbut someone else had already booked that time, so nine it is.

Someone else?Natalie’s brows lifted slightly. Her family?

From what she knew, Cindy’s relationship with her husband’s family had been strained, almost nonexistent. Even in this situation, it was unlikely they would bother to visit.

And as for her husbandwell, shame alone would keep him away.

Could be family, or maybe a friend,Lucy guessed, then her eyes brightened with curiosity. Do you

think it could be Lily’s godfather?

Natalie froze for a fraction of a second before answering quietly, You mean Marcus?

Yeah! Didn’t you say Marcus visited her before? If that’s the case, then they must still be close. I’d bet anything he’ll want to see her one last time.

Natalie shook her head slightly. Hard to say.

If it is him, you two might run into each other tomorrow

Natalie said nothing, her expression unreadable as silence stretched between them.
