But money wasn’t her true goal. What she really wanted were Saint Corp’s internal channels.

The secretary, already uneasy, spoke up. “Mr. Cullinan, this needs more thought. We can’t agree so easily. If something happens later…”

“Agreed.”

Cramer cut him off without hesitation, his voice cold. “My lawyer will contact you. you’re owed will be transferred into your account within three days.”

Even the secretary was startled.

Not only was Cramer planning to pay Wendy, he was also willing to let her continue using their most vital channels.

This would cause them endless trouble and only strengthen Wendy’s power. Everyone would assume Saint Corp and Wendy were still deeply tied together. All the people they had cleared out for Wendy’s sake–wouldn’t that have been for nothing?

The secretary wanted to argue further, but Cramer had already made his decision. All he could do was drive the car.

Once they were inside, Vivian finally turned to Cramer. Her eyes showed both confusion and guilt. “You really didn’t have to. I promised my godmother I’d do those things. I’m not worth what you just did for me.”

For the first time, Vivian felt truly vile. She had relied on a staged act with her mother, and Cramer had paid such a heavy price for it.

But her mother had told her before–only when a man paid enough for you would he cherish you. Otherwise, no matter how beautiful your face, one day he would tire of it.

Vivian had little experience with love, but Wendy, far more seasoned, understood these things clearly.

“From today, she is no longer your godmother. From now on, call her Mrs. Cullinan.”

Vivian froze at his words.

Her mother had told her the same–that after tonight she could never freely return home. again. Yet Vivian still felt an emptiness inside.
