Joel’s gaze lingered on Estella, eyes glinting with something between mischief and judgment.
“She is pretty,” he remarked. “But can she really get you to settle down?”
Winson bristled. “Don’t say that. Estella’s different from the others.”
He meant every word.
Joel’s girlfriend, standing beside him, frowned. She wasn’t blind to the implication-women like her were just toys, while Estella was supposedly in a league of her own.
Joel grinned at Winson’s serious tone and raised his hands in mock surrender. “Alright, alright. You wanna be the romantic type now? Got it. We’ll back off. But when you get tired of playing Prince Charming, come find us. Don’t keep us waiting too long.”
With that, the pair walked off, leaving Winson flustered.
He turned to Estella, almost pleading. “Estella, please don’t misunderstand. I used to mess around, sure-but I’ve changed. You’re different. I’m serious about you. I want to date you, to marry you. I swear I’m not lying.”
Estella stayed calm. “Winson, you don’t need to make promises. I invited you today to thank you for helping with the votes during the competition. And to tell you… I don’t think we’re right for each other. We should-”
“Estella!”
Winson cut her off.
“If you’re going to reject me, just don’t say it. I get it-you don’t like me yet. But give it some time, get to know me more. Maybe you’ll see what I have to offer and change your mind.”
Estella frowned. “But-”
“No buts. Just… do me this one favor. Give me a chance.”
She hesitated, then gently but firmly replied, “I’m sorry, Winson. I don’t want to give you false hope.”
“That’s my problem. I don’t expect anything-I just want to pursue you.”
He was nothing if not persistent.
Estella didn’t know how to respond.

Not far from their table, Nathaniel was dining with clients when he spotted them. After the meal, he turned to his assistant.
“Find out who that man with Estella is,” he instructed.
“Yes, sir,” the assistant replied. “Also, Ms. Isabelle asked about your dinner tonight.”
Nathaniel’s expression darkened slightly. “Got it.”
The Hartwell Group still needed support from the Monroe family. He couldn’t end things with Isabelle-yet. But his feelings for her had long faded. Their relationship had become a string of dull, strained interactions. Still, Isabelle wasn’t ready to let go.
After lunch, Estella declined Winson’s offer to drive her back.
“I’d rather go on my own,” she said.
Winson looked a little hurt. “I can’t even give you a ride?”
Estella thought for a moment. “Maybe you should focus more on your work.”
He misunderstood.
“You admire career-driven men, right? Don’t worry, Estella. If that’s what you like, I’ll become that kind of man. Just watch.”
He waved down a cab for her. “Be safe on the way back.”
Estella realized he’d misread her meaning. But maybe that wasn’t such a bad thing. If it pushed him to focus on something else and leave her alone, then so be it.
As she stepped out of the cab at her building, a sleek Maybach pulled up beside her.
Nathaniel stepped out.
Estella turned to leave, but he reached out and grabbed her wrist-only to place a small box in her hand and let
“I saw this at the mall today and thought of you,” he said softly. “I keep thinking about you. Every time I see something nice, I want to buy it for you. Estella, what am I supposed to do? The colder you are to me, the deeper I fall.”
Back when they were together, Nathaniel was infamously stingy. He barely gave her money for daily expenses, let alone gifts. Now, suddenly, he couldn’t spend enough.
