Before Estella got out of the car, Jonathan handed her a bag of strawberries and blueberries he had just bought. “Help me send my regards to Ms. Victoria. I get the feeling she doesn’t like me very much, so I won’t go up.”
Estella sighed. “My mom has a difficult temper, don’t take it personally.”
Jonathan smiled. “I don’t.” He was never good at dealing with elders anyway, so there was no point making things harder for her.
Estella thanked him, took the fruit, and headed into the hospital.
Victoria was sitting on the bed, and with her were two people.
As soon as Estella saw them, her face fell.
It was Victoria’s younger sister Lina Lawson, and Lina’s son Wilson.
Back when Estella’s father had his accident, the family company went bankrupt, and Victoria suffered a breakdown, Estella had once gone to Lina for help.
After all, Lina’s family had benefited plenty from Tristan’s support back in the day. The two families had always been close, often visiting one another. Estella had assumed Lina would surely lend a hand.
But instead, Lina moved away and cut off all contact.
That was when Estella finally understood – Lina had never been the kind, gentle person she pretended to be. The warmth she had shown before was nothing more than gratitude for what Tristan Hayes had provided.
When the Hayes family collapsed, Lina couldn’t run from them fast enough.
Now, more than ten years later, Estella didn’t understand why Lina had suddenly reappeared to see her mother.
Lina’s eyes
lit
up when she spotted her niece.
“Estella, you’ve changed so much. You’re even prettier than before! I heard you’ve started your own business now? No wonder, you’re Tristan’s daughter you must’ve inherited his head for business!”

Victoria dismissed the compliment with a wave. “She doesn’t have half the ability her father did. She’s already lost quite a bit of money. If you ask me, a woman should just marry a rich man instead of wasting time on all this. I don’t know what she’s trying to prove, and it only

Lina laughed. “Are you just trying to make me jealous? I’d be thrilled if my son had that kind of drive. Too bad everything he’s tried in business has lost money. Luckily his father supports him, or he’d be penniless by now.”
To regain Victoria’s trust, Lina explained that she and her son had followed her husband out of town for years to build up a business, and now that they had finally succeeded, she had time to visit.
Hearing that her sister’s family had done well, Victoria let bygones be bygones.
Lina then sweet–talked her, even offering to introduce Estella to a wealthy husband. Victoria warmed to her even more.
Turning to her daughter, she snapped, “What are you standing there for? Greet them.”
For her mother’s sake, Estella kept her composure. She gave a cool nod. “Hello.”
Lina studied her niece’s beauty with satisfaction, then said to Victoria, “Actually, I came to ask you a favor. Wilson’s father spoils him too much, and he hasn’t learned much from the family company. Why not let him work with Estella? He could toughen up a bit, maybe even improve himself. Besides, Estella’s a woman. Some social obligations aren’t convenient for her to handle. Wilson could take them on, lighten her load. And also-”
She leaned closer to whisper in Victoria’s ear. “If Estella has less on her plate, she’ll have more time for dating, won’t she?”
Victoria nodded, thinking it sounded reasonable.
She turned to her daughter. “Wilson is Lina’s son, your cousin. Help him out, let him join your arts center as a partner. He can take care of things for you so you won’t be so busy. What do you think?”
Estella almost laughed out loud.
So this was Lina’s plan – to walk in empty–handed and walk out with her son set up for the future?
And just because Wilson was a man, he was supposed to take over her work?
On what grounds?
Her tone was flat. “That won’t be necessary, Mom. I can manage fine. Besides, I started this business with my senior. Any new partner has to be approved by her too.”
Victoria frowned. “What’s that supposed to mean? Isn’t it your center too? You put in so much.
