Lina laughed. “I’m your sister, so my son is your son too. In the future he’ll be filial to you as well!”
Wilson chimed in with a silly grin. “When you get old, you can come live with me and Mom. I’ll take care of you just the same!”
Victoria’s face lit up instantly. “See? Having a son really is different.”
Estella found the whole scene ridiculous.
and She was the one paying her mother’s medical bills, hiring caretakers, spending money energy — yet in the end, she still couldn’t compare to a few empty promises from Lina and her
son.

After Lina and Wilson left, Estella turned to her mother. “Mom, don’t give your heart away so easily to Lina’s family. All these years they never once came to see you. Doesn’t it seem strange that they suddenly show up now?”
–
Victoria brushed it off with a frown. “You’re overthinking things. Lina is eight years younger than me – I practically raised her. What kind of hidden agenda could she have? And if she didn’t visit before, it must’ve been because she was tied down taking care of her husband and child. How much free time could she have? Besides, isn’t she here now? She even said she wants to introduce you to a husband. Isn’t that caring for you? Stop thinking the worst of her. The more family we have looking out for each other, the better.”
Estella’s brows knitted. “If her family’s business is doing well, they shouldn’t be short on money. So why did they come to see you without even bringing fruit? And why does she want Wilson to

Victoria waved her hand. “What’s strange about it? Wilson is your cousin, helping him isn’t a big deal. And your center does need a man to handle the social side of things. Wilson is perfect for that.”
Estella felt utterly powerless trying to communicate with her mother.
She didn’t understand it – Victoria was usually sharp with other people, but when it came to Lina’s family, she became blind and deaf.
Lina’s scheming was obvious, yet Victoria refused to see it.
Estella sighed and kept quiet.
Victoria’s eyes landed on the fruit. “Imported fruit? That must’ve been expensive. Why didn’t you give some to Lina when she was here?”

Estella nearly laughed out loud. They hadn’t brought a single thing, and her mother expected her to give away what Jonathan had bought?
“This was from Jonathan,” she said.
Victoria’s expression soured immediately. “You’re still seeing that lawyer? I told you, he’s not suitable. I think Winson is much better.”
Estella pulled a wry smile and couldn’t help blurting out what she knew about Winson’s illegitimate child.
Victoria’s face darkened. “…Winson really did that?”
But then she hesitated. “Still, if he doesn’t intend to marry that woman, then she can’t threaten you. And if she won’t even allow the child to live in his household, then maybe it’s not such a big deal.”
Estella let out a bitter laugh. “So you really don’t mind me becoming a stepmother?”
Victoria sighed. “Times have changed. Young rich men today aren’t like the ones from before. Your father was a good man, but too soft- that’s why he couldn’t hold on. You’ll never find someone like him again. Isn’t it better to lower your standards? Even if a man made mistakes before marriage, as long as he changes afterward, what does it matter?”
Estella froze, eyes widening. “Mom… you remember now?” Her voice trembled, her eyes filling with tears. “Since when?”
Victoria held her hand. “I’ve remembered for a long time. Why else do you think I push you to marry a wealthy man? Without your father to protect you, and with me sick, my medical bills are a huge burden every month. What will your life be like in the future?”
A flood of complicated emotions swept through Estella.
She wiped her tears and said, “Mom, trust me. I can earn enough for us to live well. And Jonathan isn’t as bad as you think. He’s capable – he even bought his own place.”
She told her about Jonathan’s new apartment, the neighborhood, and its value.
