“You know,” Victoria said, “back when we lived next door to the Zacharys, both parents spent all their time on their careers. She had no intention of chatting, but Isaac carried on as though he hadn’t noticed. “Have you heard of the Bennett family in Kingston?”

Estella had seen their name in the news – one of Kingston’s top old–money families, wealthy and extremely low–key.

Because of Jonathan, she had met Jeremy a few times, and she had been surprised to find him approachable and unpretentious. It spoke to the Bennett family’s good upbringing.

Isaac went on. “I heard Madam Rosemary came to Javerton this morning. I don’t know why she came so suddenly, but she’s staying at this hospital. I wanted to visit her, but apparently she isn’t receiving guests. A shame, really.”

Then he gave Estella a knowing look. “But I just happened to see someone go into her room. Do you know who?”

Estella wasn’t interested in his riddles. “Who?”

“Jonathan,” Isaac said. “He’s a Bennett too, and he’s close with Jeremy. Do you think he might be related to the family?”

Estella remembered Jonathan saying he was from Kingston. Since he and Jeremy seemed like childhood friends, she assumed the shared surname was coincidence and nothing more.

Calmly, she replied, “Jonathan probably just knows them well. Visiting Madam Rosemary isn’t a big deal.”

“Really?” Isaac didn’t look convinced. To him, Jonathan’s identity was anything but simple.

He had already tried to investigate Jonathan but had found nothing concrete came from Kingston, with everything else carefully hidden.

“What a pity,” Isaac sighed. “I thought you’d know something. After all, with his presence and ability, he doesn’t seem like he comes from an ordinary family. But if he hasn’t even told you about his relatives, doesn’t that mean he isn’t being honest with you?”

Estella didn’t think so. Everyone had things they chose not to talk about. She herself avoided mentioning her previous marriage. If Jonathan wanted to tell her, he would. If not, she wouldn’t pry.

Finding Isaac’s probing almost amusing, she said, “I may not know Jonathan completely, but whether he’s sincere with me is something I can judge myself. You don’t need to worry about it.”

Isaac was taken aback. The women he had dated were always eager to dig into his family, his wealth, his secrets. Estella’s indifference was unexpected.

“You don’t even know who he really is, and you’re still willing to be with him?” he asked.

“Why not?” Estella countered. “Do you insist on knowing every single detail about someone before you can be their friend?”

To her, shared values, interests, and easy conversation were what determined a relationship’s worth.

For someone like Isaac, she thought, it was probably a person’s value and resources that mattered most.
