If Selene wanted to tell her, she would. If not, Estella would still stay by her side.

Selene sighed. “It was my first love. He’d broken up and was in between relationships, and I ended up with him. Who knew he’d dump me again, get together with someone else, and now he’s even planning to marry her?
I was his backup for so many years. I knew he didn’t love me, but I still clung to a little hope… Now that he’s about to get married, it’s time I let go.”
On the surface, Selene always acted carefree about relationships. But Estella hadn’t realized she had been carrying someone in her heart all this time.
“You don’t want him to know?” Estella asked softly.
Selene shook her head. “There’s no need. He doesn’t care about me anyway.”
“I’ll be here with you,” Estella said firmly.
Selene chuckled. “Turns out friends are the only ones you can really rely on. Men are trash always. I’ve been dreaming for years, but it’s about time I wake up.”
Estella helped her book the procedure, a caretaker, and postpartum meal services.
“An abortion is hard on the body. Take a month off,” Estella told her.
Selene felt guilty, “Can you handle everything on your own?”
“No problem,” Estella reassured her. “Just focus on resting.”
The surgery was scheduled for the next day, and Selene had to be admitted overnight. Estella stayed until the caretaker arrived before preparing to leave.
Since Victoria was in the same hospital, she decided to stop by.
Her mother greeted her with concern. “Why are you here all of a sudden? Are you sick?”
“I’m here with Selene. She’s not feeling well and will be staying for a bit,” Estella explained.
Victoria remembered Selene she had come to visit before, even bringing gifts.
—
“What’s wrong with her? Should I go check on her?”
Estella shook her head. “No, she needs rest.”

Chapter 15 Selene’s Choice
Finished
But Victoria insisted. “She used to bring me things when she came. Now that she’s sick, of course I should see her. Such a good girl. If only she were married, then someone would be there to take care of her.”
Estella stayed silent. Somehow her mother could twist anything back to marriage.
Fearing Victoria might actually barge in, she told her the truth.
Victoria was stunned. “Pregnant? And she’s getting rid of it?”
She shook her head. “What a sin.”
Estella sighed. “Mom, don’t say anything to her. Times are different now. Women have the right to choose.”
“Oh, so it’s right for a mother to abandon her child now? I don’t care how much money you girls make nothing is more important than having your own children.”

She started up again. “And being unmarried and pregnant how shameful. In love, women always pay the higher price. Men get away with everything, women suffer. If the man wanted her, would she even think about aborting? The truth is, she couldn’t keep him. That’s why women shouldn’t waste themselves on careers. Earn all the money you want, but what’s the point if your personal life is a mess?”
Estella’s chest tightened. Selene had been the one to help her when she was at rock bottom, giving her work and support. She couldn’t let her mother insult her like this.
“Mom,” she said firmly, “I don’t think Selene is wrong. She thought it through carefully and knows she can’t take responsibility for a child right now. Isn’t it better to choose not to have it than to give birth and raise the child poorly? That would be irresponsible.
And I don’t believe a woman must be someone’s wife or someone’s mother for her life to have meaning. Why can’t a woman simply be herself, build her own career, live her own life?”
Victoria stared, surprised her daughter had dared to contradict her.
A moment later she scowled. “You’re talking nonsense. You’ll regret thinking like that. What I’ve told you is the truth wisdom passed down for thousands of years.”
—
Estella poured her a glass of water. “Mom, enough. Drink this and rest. And when you see Selene, don’t give her one of your lectures. She doesn’t need that right now.”
Selene was already in pain
– she didn’t need to be wounded further.
