Madam Rosemary couldn’t help but sigh. “You’re such a sweet girl. I just wonder which lucky boy will get you in the future. A pity I only have two grandsons.”
Estella chuckled. “I’ll take that as a compliment. Thank you. Take care on your way back.”
When Madam Rosemary left the apartment complex, she slid into the waiting Rolls–Royce at the gate.
The driver turned his head. “Ma’am, should we keep waiting?”
She pursed her lips. “Forget it. That boy works like a maniac. I’d turn into an icicle before he showed up. Let’s go.”
She opened the thermos Estella had given her and sipped the fruit tea. Warmth spread through her chest, and she muttered with a smile, “Hmph, grandsons will never be as thoughtful as granddaughters. If only I had one.”
The driver laughed. “You’re right, Ma’am. I feel the same. My daughter is far more attentive than my son. Every time I go out, she makes sure I’ve got warm clothes. My son? Not a word. That’s why I treasure my girl even more.”
Madam Rosemary nodded. “That’s true. You must find her a good family when she marries.”
The driver sighed. “Of course. I’ve set aside an apartment for my son and prepared a dowry for my daughter. When she marries, I’ll even give her a hundred thousand toward the down payment. At least it’ll take some pressure off.”
Madam Rosemary frowned. “If you love your daughter so much, why not buy her the whole place?”
The driver gave a bitter smile. “We don’t have that kind of money. The son must come first- how else can he get married? And later, he’ll be the one to support us. My daughter doesn’t need it. Once she’s married, her husband’s family will take care of the rest.”
The old woman fell silent.
No wonder young women didn’t want to marry anymore. When even their own parents set different standards for sons and daughters, how could anyone expect their in–laws to treat them
well?
She thought again—if she ever did have a granddaughter, she’d keep her at home, make sure she married into their household, never let her suffer. But other people’s daughters? At best, their families scraped together a dowry of ten thousand.

At eleven–thirty that night, Jonathan finally left the firm.
Passing a flower shop, he noticed the lights still on. On impulse, he bought a bouquet of purple tulips.
“For your girlfriend?” the shopkeeper asked with a smile.
Jonathan shook his head. “A friend.”
The man chuckled. “My daughter always watches you from upstairs when you walk by. Three years now, and just recently you’ve started buying flowers. Looks like you’ve finally found someone special. Good luck–make it official.”
Jonathan looked down at the bouquet and smiled softly. “Thanks.”
From there, he stopped at a dessert shop. “One taro sago, extra milk, half–sweet, no ice.”
The owner rang it up. “Got it–twenty–eight.”
Jonathan paid, but the woman leaned closer with a knowing grin. “This is for Ms. Hayes, isn’t it? My daughter studies piano with her. Lots of men are chasing after her. You’d better step it up— lately there have been more young masters in luxury cars waiting outside her studio.”
