Estella looked at him intently. “The wound on your arm–it’s already scabbed over, isn’t it?”

Jonathan nodded lightly. “It’s fine.”

He said it as if it were nothing at all, like a scratch barely worth mentioning. Estella knew he never liked to take credit in front of her, so instead of pushing the subject, she shifted.

“I bought some canned food for Bailey. Take it back with you later.”

Jonathan didn’t refuse. “Alright.”

Over time, the two of them had fallen into a natural rhythm. When Jonathan was buried in work, Estella would sometimes take Bailey for a walk or feed him his kibble.

“It’s late. I should get going.”

As always, Jonathan kept his visits measured. He never overstayed–just a short while, then he’d leave. He grabbed the trash bag, changed his shoes, and headed for the door.

“The cans,” Estella reminded quickly.

He accepted them, then paused. “I’m visiting an elder this weekend. Would you like to come with me?”

Estella froze. They weren’t at that stage yet. Meeting his family–wasn’t that too soon?

“It’s just… I want you to know me better,” Jonathan explained with a calm smile.

He didn’t see his identity as something that would impress her. But he didn’t want to hide anything, either.

Estella still hesitated.

Sensing her unease, Jonathan added warmly, “Think of it this way: I’ve taken a number in your line. You don’t owe me anything. Treat me as a friend.

“Introducing you to my family isn’t meant to pressure you. It’s just part of letting you see my world. Once you know all of me, then you can decide carefully whether or not to accept me.”

His affection was pure. Respectful. Never forced.

The way he spoke so lightly eased her tension.

“Alright. I’ll go with you this weekend.”

But as she stepped out of the fruit shop, she saw a car pull up at the curb.

The door opened. Nathaniel stepped out.

Her brows knit instantly.

“Estella, I need to talk to you,” he said evenly.

“I have nothing to say to you.” She turned to leave.

“You’ll talk to me,” he answered calmly, as if certain.
