Chapter 181 The Debt Trap

No matter how biased her mother was toward Lina, she would never shoulder such an enormous debt for them.

Nathaniel’s voice was calm, almost detached. “I asked around. Your aunt tricked her into signing a blank sheet of paper. Later, they printed this debt transfer agreement on top of it. Legally, it holds.”

Estella’s mind went blank.

All her money was tied up in her business. She couldn’t possibly cover fifty million. And it wasn’t even her debt–it belonged to Lina’s family. What did that have to do with her?

“I’ll talk to Lina myself.” Estella bit down hard, fury simmering.

“It’s useless,” Nathaniel said evenly. “Do you think people who scheme against you and mother so shamelessly will ever admit what they’ve done?”

Estella whipped her head toward him, her voice sharp. “And how do you know so much about this? Was this your idea?”

A wounded look flickered across his face. “Estella, how could you think I’d ever harm you or your mother?”

But the truth was, it had been his idea. He simply would never admit it.

He steadied his tone. “Yes, I helped Wilson repay his gambling debt. Because I didn’t want him harassing you and causing you stress. I know he’s family. You might not say it, but deep down you want them to be well. I even had people keeping an eye on him to stop him from gambling again. That’s how I discovered this. And I thought–if your aunt and Wilson showed this agreement directly to your mother, it would devastate her. So I came to you first. Believe me, Estella, I’m only trying to help. Fifty million is nothing to me. But for you, it could ruin everything.”

Her chest rose and fell with angry breaths. “If you want to help them, that’s your problem. As for me, I will not accept this. I’ll call the police. I’ll hire a lawyer. I will never take on their debt.”

Nathaniel sighed, almost pitying. “Estella, your mother’s signature is already there. That makes it her responsibility. If she doesn’t pay, she goes to prison. No amount of lawyers or police will change that.”

Her lips pressed into a thin line.

“I’ve already contacted Lina and Wilson,” Nathaniel continued. “Let’s sit down and talk. I’ll cover the money for now. You can repay me slowly, in your own time.”

Her eyes narrowed. “Why would you be so generous?”

“Because I regret everything I did to you. I want to make amends. In money, in life–any way I

can.”

The words scraped against her nerves, but fifty million wasn’t something she could ignore. After a long silence, she finally nodded. “Fine. I’ll go with you. I want to hear from their own mouths how they could be so cruel.”

The car rolled toward the Hartwell estate. Estella’s wariness spiked. “Why not meet at a café? Why your house?”

Nathaniel’s tone was steady. “Zelda is home. What’s there to fear? And Lina and Wilson are already at my place. I can’t just change the location now.”

Estella’s instincts screamed at her. “No. If it isn’t outside, then I won’t go. Either we reschedule, or I’ll meet them myself.”

If they tried to force her into bearing this debt, she’d drag them all down with her before letting them succeed.

Nathaniel studied her expression, frustration simmering. “Fine. There’s a café near the house. We’ll go there.”

She exhaled, only slightly less tense. “Good.”

Inside the café, Nathaniel ordered her a coffee, then picked up his phone.

“I’ve messaged Wilson and your aunt. They’ll be here soon.”

Estella gave a small nod.

Seeing her anger still flickering, Nathaniel leaned forward, softening his voice. “Estella, this isn’t insurmountable. I’m here. I’ll protect you. You won’t be wronged.”

She bit down on her lip, refusing to respond.
