Chapter 64 Back to the Cage
Nathaniel suddenly realized he really hadn’t treated her well in the past.

He steadied himself and forced a gentle smile. “Then I’ll change. Whatever you like, I’ll buy it for you.”
“No need. I don’t want anything.”
Victoria stepped out of the ward just in time to hear Estella’s curt words. She immediately scolded, “Estella, how can you talk to Nathaniel like that? He bought you breakfast, he’s patient and kind, and you still throw a tantrum? Don’t be so willful, or your husband might run off one day. Then you’ll be the one crying!”
Nathaniel smiled gently at Victoria. “It’s fine, Mom. Estella’s just under pressure from work. If her temper flares a little, I can handle it.”
Victoria gave her daughter a reproachful look. “He’s the one making the money for this household. How much could you possibly earn from your job? Certainly not as much as Nathaniel.”
Nathaniel’s smile never wavered. “Mom, Estella loves her work. It makes her feel valuable. Whether she earns a little or a lot, her happiness matters most. I’ll always support her.”
Victoria’s face softened into a fond smile.
Estella, though, only felt his hypocrisy.
She knew her mother’s memory came and went.
But she couldn’t stand to watch Nathaniel lying to her like this anymore. She had come prepared to lay everything bare.
While Nathaniel stepped out to take a call, Estella sat beside Victoria’s bed and said seriously, “Mom, I’ve thought about this for a long time. I need to tell you-Nathaniel and I are divorced.”
“Divorced?” Victoria froze.
“How can that be? Didn’t you just get married not long ago? Is it just some small quarrel?”
Her memory was still stuck in those newlywed days.
She clasped Estella’s hand, speaking earnestly. “Every couple bickers in the beginning. Your father and I fought constantly when we first married, but we still made it through. Divorce doesn’t solve anything. You need to communicate with Nathaniel. I can see he still cares—why else would he spend so much time with me? And think about his background. If you leave him,

can you find another as good? While he still loves you, you should remarry him.”

Estella felt helpless. Her mother’s memory faltered so badly, there was no way to reason with her.
She pressed firmly, “Mom, I really can’t live with him anymore. Please don’t interfere. If he comes, just send him away.”
Victoria’s face darkened.
She was a traditional woman. In her mind, unless a husband crossed some unforgivable line, marriage was meant to be endured. Divorce was shameful. She refused to lose face like that.
“If you don’t remarry him, then you’re no daughter of mine,” she snapped.
A headache throbbed behind Estella’s eyes. There was no reasoning with a sick, stubborn mother.
Nathaniel walked back in, smiling warmly. “Mom, I just spoke with the doctor. He says your condition is stable enough for you to go home for a few days. Would you like that?”
Victoria lit up immediately. “Of course, I’ve wanted to leave the hospital for
ages.”
She turned to Estella. “You hear me? Communicate with Nathaniel. Nothing can’t be solved.”
Estella’s face stayed cold. “Mom, Nathaniel and I have been living apart for a long time.”
They already had divorce papers. She wasn’t going back.
But Victoria brushed her off. “I know you’re just being impulsive. You married him right after graduation because you loved him. Now he’s chasing you again. Don’t play hard to get—just go re-register your marriage.”
Nathaniel gave Estella a soft smile. “We don’t have to rush the remarriage. What matters first is getting Mom home and comfortable.”
Estella glared at him.
He acted as if he didn’t see, busily packing Victoria’s belongings instead.
He knew Victoria was Estella’s weak spot. With her help, he could win Estella back.
No matter what Estella said, Victoria insisted on going home,
“If you don’t move back with him, then don’t bother visiting me again,” she warned.
Estella’s worry for her mother left her no choice. For now, she returned home.
