Chapter 69 Misunderstood
Jonathan’s lips curved faintly. “Then I’ll accept the invitation.”
The four of them headed to the restaurant.

Selene had already done her homework-Lana told her Jonathan liked local food, so she picked one of the most popular spots in town.
As soon as the drinks were served, Jonathan naturally picked up the bowl and fork in front of Estella and rinsed them in hot water for her.
Selene and Lana exchanged a look. For a moment, they both felt a little like third wheels.
Selene couldn’t resist teasing. “Mr. Jonathan, you’re so busy, yet you still made time to help us check out the office space. Could it be you have a thing for our Estella?”
Estella was sipping her tea and nearly choked at Selene’s words, coughing uncontrollably.
Jonathan reached over and gently patted her back.
Then, unhurriedly, he replied to Selene, “We’re neighbors. Helping each other is the polite thing to do.”
Though he didn’t answer directly, the way he instinctively cared for Estella was enough to spark imagination.
Selene blinked playfully. “Then Mr. Jonathan really is the most considerate neighbor. How come I never meet ones like that?”
Estella didn’t want the teasing to go too far and give anyone the wrong idea. She grabbed a slice of guava from the table and stuffed it into Selene’s mouth. “You should try this fruit.”
Selene knew she was being shy and didn’t press further. She munched on the fruit with a laugh and let the matter drop.
Soon, the food arrived.
Estella had just picked up her chopsticks when her phone rang.
It was a call from her own number-Nathaniel.
She answered. But it was Nathaniel’s voice on the line.
“I took the afternoon off,” he said. “I’m taking Mom to the supermarket. Do you want anything? I’ve already picked out a few dishes. I’ll have Zelda make them tonight.”

Estella frowned. She hadn’t expected Nathaniel, who was normally swamped with work, to suddenly have time to take her mom grocery shopping.
Her voice was distant. “No need. I won’t be home for dinner.”
She hung up.
Jonathan looked at her. “You haven’t been home lately. Where are you staying?”
Estella didn’t want to lie. “My mom’s been staying at Nathaniel’s place. I didn’t want to leave her alone, so I’ve been staying in the guest room.”
The words hit Jonathan like a gut punch. His face darkened.
“He treated you like that, and you’re still thinking of getting back with him?”
She hadn’t talked much about her relationship with Nathaniel, but from the way Nathaniel kept showing up and clinging to her, Jonathan had pieced together the situation.
And from what he’d seen of Nathaniel, the man was not someone worthy of her trust.
Sensing the shift in atmosphere, Lana and Selene exchanged another glance. Then, silently, they stood up.
“I just remembered there’s an urgent email I need to reply to,” Lana said. “I’ll head back first.”
“The property manager just messaged me-there’s a leak at my place. I’ve got to take care of it,” Selene added.
Jonathan barely looked at them.
They left swiftly.
Jonathan turned back to Estella, resuming their conversation. “Do you regret divorcing him?”
His gaze locked onto her, sharp and intense.
Estella felt pinned in place, unable to move.
She knew Jonathan had feelings for her.
And truthfully, she admired him too.
But her life was a mess. Too much unresolved baggage. Starting a new relationship now would
be unfair to him.

Still, she didn’t want him to misunderstand her silence.

Just as she was gathering the courage to explain, Jonathan stood abruptly, his voice cold. “I have to go.”
He turned and walked away.
Estella’s heart jumped.
She didn’t know why she felt panicked-but she couldn’t let him leave like that.
She rushed after him, grabbing his sleeve.
