Estella felt exhausted. “Mom…”

She wanted to tell her the truth-that Nathaniel wasn’t the man she thought he was. But how could she explain it? Her mother’s illness shielded her from painful memories. Even if Estella laid everything bare, her mother might feel upset for a moment, only to forget it all the next day. What was the point?
She gave a perfunctory answer. “I’ll talk to you when I get back. If nothing’s wrong, just go rest.”
She hung up and rushed outside to find Jonathan, but he had already gotten into his car. Before she could reach him, he’d driven away.
Estella dragged her fingers through her hair, frustrated. She understood how fragile the early stage of any relationship could be. And with Jonathan, he had always been the one making the effort-while she had spent most of the time avoiding it. Now that she realized they might part ways just like that, a strange panic rose in her chest. She didn’t want things to end like this.
But he was already gone.
After hesitating, she called him. No answer.
She called again. Still nothing.
The third time, he picked up.
Neither of them spoke at first. She could hear the GPS voice in the background of his car.
“Talk,” he said, voice edged with thinly veiled irritation.
“Jonathan, it’s not what you think.”
He cut her off. “There’s nothing between us, Ms. Estella. You don’t need to explain anything to me. If that’s all, I’m hanging up.”
He did.
Estella stood there, phone pressed to her ear, suddenly feeling a wave of helplessness and hurt wash over her. She stayed on the sidewalk for a long time before finally calling a cab and heading back to the Hartwell estate.
Meanwhile, Jonathan pulled over to the side of the road and yanked his tie loose, his frustration simmering. He’d lost control. The moment he heard Estella was living at Nathaniel’s house again-even temporarily-he was overwhelmed by a jealous fury he didn’t know how to handle. He had no right to ask her to move out, but he still said it. He couldn’t help himself.

Even if she’d said she had no intention of getting back together with Nathaniel, what man could bear to see the woman he liked living under the same roof as her ex-husband? The thought drove him mad. That’s why, in front of her, he lost control and let his emotions show.
He was always calm. Always rational. Rarely like this.
Now that the moment had passed, regret crept in. He shouldn’t have spoken to her that way.
Taking a deep breath, he turned the steering wheel and headed back toward the restaurant.
But when he arrived, Estella was already gone.
He sat there gripping the wheel, an unfamiliar feeling of powerlessness rising in his chest. He was always in control in business, always calculating, always steady. But when it came to her… he didn’t know what to do.
Estella returned to the Hartwell estate. As soon as she stepped inside, Nathaniel came out wearing an apron, smiling warmly.
“You’re back early today. I was just learning how to make soup with Zelda. Dinner will be ready soon. Sit down and relax.”
Estella didn’t respond. She silently changed her shoes.
Victoria came out of the kitchen and immediately scolded her. “Estella, why are you so cold to Nathaniel? Go help him in the kitchen.”
Estella didn’t want anything to do with Nathaniel, but before she could protest, Victoria shoved her into the kitchen.
Zelda, ever perceptive, quickly said, “I’ll go set the table and polish the forks,” then made herself scarce.
Now it was just the two of them.
Nathaniel lifted the pot lid and checked the bubbling soup. His tone was casual, as if making small talk. “Had lunch with Jonathan today?”
Estella’s expression shifted sharply. She stared at him, stunned. “You had me followed?”
Nathaniel turned back to look at her, and the softness in his eyes disappeared, replaced by something far more oppressive. “Estella, you know my temper. I’ll let it go this time, but if you go on another date with Jonathan, I can’t guarantee what I’ll do.”
Her brows furrowed. “We’re divorced. You have no right to interfere.”

“Is that so?”
He stepped forward, forcing her into the corner.
Estella tried to push him away, but she couldn’t budge him.
He grabbed her chin and leaned in, trying to kiss her.
Her eyes narrowed. Then, without hesitation, she slammed her forehead into his.
