To Estella’s surprise, that strange, fluttering feeling wasn’t unpleasant at all. On the contrary-it stirred something complicated and subtle in her chest.

Trying to put space between them, she gently pushed Jonathan away. But she hadn’t expected him to stumble so suddenly-he lost his balance and fell straight to the floor.

He looked up at her from where he landed, eyes wide and wounded, like a puppy who’d just been kicked. It was ridiculous. And yet, Estella instantly felt a wave of guilt crash over her.

She crouched down and helped him to his feet again, muttering under her breath about how hopeless he was. Then, reaching into his pocket, she pulled out his keys and unlocked the door to his apartment.

The moment the door swung open, a blur of golden fur came charging toward her-Bailey.

The golden retriever bounded up with overwhelming enthusiasm, tail wagging like a propeller, licking her hands and cheeks with joyful whines, as though she were a long-lost friend finally come home.

Caught off guard by Bailey’s enthusiastic welcome, Estella couldn’t help but laugh. “Alright, alright, Bailey,” she said, scratching his ears. “Calm down.”

Jonathan, meanwhile, was still barely on his feet. She half-dragged, half-supported him into the bedroom while Bailey trailed behind them like a loyal shadow.

Estella gently laid Jonathan down on the bed and pulled the comforter over him. She was about to turn and leave when suddenly-his hand shot out and grabbed her wrist.

Caught off guard, she lost her balance and fell straight onto his chest with a thud.

The world seemed to pause.

Pressed against him, Estella stared wide-eyed. His face was just inches from hers. His thick eyelashes fluttered slightly, casting delicate shadows across his cheekbones. He looked peaceful, beautiful, and frustratingly magnetic.

She swallowed.

It was hard to deny-Jonathan had a certain pull. A quiet, compelling kind of allure that made it difficult to look away.

As she tried to rise, he suddenly murmured, “I… I want some water…”

His voice was husky, barely a whisper. Eyes still closed, like he was talking in his sleep.

Estella sighed, gently pulled her wrist free, and padded off to the kitchen. She brewed him a warm remedy and returned to feed it to him slowly, helping him sip until the cup was empty.

Then, she stood. Ready to go.

Bailey, who’d been lying quietly nearby, suddenly jumped up and followed her, tail drooping and eyes full of sadness.

Estella knelt down again and stroked his soft head. “I’ll come visit you again, Bailey. Don’t be sad.”

Bailey nuzzled her palm.

She gave one last pat to his floppy ears and turned toward the door.

Behind her, in the silence of the room, Jonathan’s eyelashes twitched. His lips moved ever so slightly. “I like you, Estella…” he whispered.
