Wendy was momentarily stunned by how coldly Jonathan had rejected her. Her breath caught in her throat, and she bit her lip hard in frustration.
If she couldn’t have Jonathan-then Estella shouldn’t, either.
“Then promise me you won’t go see Estella.”
Jonathan’s smile turned colder.
“Why should I promise you that? Wendy, my patience has limits. Don’t think that just because you saved me, you get to order me around. I told you-if you want money or connections, I can help. But if it’s love you want, don’t waste your time.”
And with that, Jonathan left the hospital.
Back in his car, he picked up his phone, wanting to call Estella.
But it was already far too late at night. In the end, he held back.
The next morning, Jonathan received a call from Mr. Morton.
“Jonathan, did you hear about Wendy’s accident last night?”
Out of respect for his elder, Jonathan responded politely.
“Yes. I was there. She was injured because of me.”
Mr. Morton sighed on the other end. “I’m overseas with her mother right now and can’t be there to take care of her. Jonathan, please-I’m asking you to look after Wendy for me.”
Jonathan stayed silent.
Mr. Morton knew Jonathan wasn’t fond of Wendy. But right now, there was no one else he could turn to.
“Think of it as a favor for saving your nephew’s life.”
When Jeremy’s son had fallen into a river as a child, it was Mr. Morton who had jumped in to
save him.
The Bennett family had never forgotten that debt.
In the end, Jonathan relented. “Alright. I’ll check in on her when I can these next few days.”

Estella picked up her injury report from the hospital.
Back home, she told Victoria about her visit.
Victoria’s face instantly flushed, her chest heaving with emotion. Her voice rose several octaves, charged with both passion and finality.
“If you insist on taking me away, then from now on-don’t call me your mother!”
The truth was, over the past few days, Victoria had started regaining her memory.
She knew now-her husband was gone.
The family had gone bankrupt.
But she hadn’t told her daughter, afraid Estella would worry even more.
And deep down, she knew her illness came and went unpredictably-and treating it would cost a fortune.
Every time she looked at the long string of numbers on the hospital bills, her heart twisted in pain.
She understood the financial burden had already pushed her daughter to the edge. She couldn’t bear to be the source of more suffering.
The only way Estella could have a stable, happy life was by marrying someone like Nathaniel- a rich, powerful man.
Just the thought of her daughter breaking up with Nathaniel and having to work herself to the bone to cover medical bills and make ends meet filled Victoria with guilt.
So no matter what, she had to push her daughter toward Nathaniel-to escape this life of hardship.
And after spending time observing him, Victoria had become more and more convinced Nathaniel was the ideal son-in-law.
Sure, he had his flaws. But what man didn’t?
If her daughter let someone like him slip away, she’d definitely regret it in the future.
Even if these harsh words damaged their relationship, Victoria was willing to go all the way—
