Yuri had already walked up to them. He glanced at Zane first, giving him a slight nod, before turning to Zinnia.
“Has your group submitted the project proposal for the competition yet?”
“I was planning to send it in this afternoon,” Zinnia replied.
“Alright, I’ll go with you then.”
Yuri didn’t linger. It seemed his entire reason for being there was simply to ask Zinnia that one, straightforward question—then he was ready to leave.
“W-wait… wait!”
Zane finally spoke, his voice shaky as he reached out and grabbed Yuri’s arm with trembling hands.
“What’s… what’s your name?”
“Yuri.”
“Ford… So your last name is Ford…”
Zane’s eyes grew unfocused and distant. Then, as if searching for something long lost, he stared intently at Yuri’s face, almost desperately, as though trying to catch a glimpse of another person in those eyes.
“Your… your mother—is she Violet Ford?”
Yuri’s expression barely changed. It was as if he’d anticipated this question from the very beginning. He held Zane’s gaze for a few seconds, then nodded.
“Yes, Grandpa.”
The word “Grandpa” slipped from Yuri’s lips, startling both Zinnia and Leanna, who had been eavesdropping on the exchange.
G-Grandpa?
Wait, so he’s not an uncle—he’s a cousin?
Neither Zinnia nor Leanna had ever heard that Zane had a daughter.
The moment Zane heard Yuri call him “Grandpa,” tears streamed down his face. He clung to Yuri’s arm, his voice choked with emotion.
“Is… is your mother… is she alright?”
Yuri said nothing. He pressed his lips together, staring at Zane for a long moment before answering quietly,
“Do you want my mother to come back to the Ford family?”
Zane’s lips quivered even harder. “Would… would she even want to?”
Yuri let out a faint, bitter laugh.
