Landon walked in and sat down on the couch, not waiting to be invited. He got straight to the point.
“Aunt Violet, did you know that Sawyer is the real owner behind Canyon Tech?”
Violet looked momentarily surprised, then gave a small, knowing smile.
“Yes, I know. Why do you ask?”
He continued, “Then do you also know that one of Canyon’s subsidiaries is secretly involved in arms trafficking?”
If they were dealing arms, Landon thought, there was no way that was the only illegal business they were running.
Violet’s expression darkened, her brow furrowing sharply. “Arms trafficking? Are you sure about that?”
Landon didn’t answer. He just fixed Violet with a long, silent stare.
After a moment, Violet let out a sigh and said, “Landon, I may still be angry at Zane for what happened to Yuri’s father all those years ago, but Yuri is twenty-six now. Nearly three decades have passed. I’ve let go of my resentment. I know the Ford family’s code is to never get involved in anything illegal. Sawyer may be my husband, but I honestly had no idea he was mixed up in the arms trade.”
Her tone was sincere, her face showing not a hint of guilt. “Yuri is my son. Even for his sake, I would never let him get close to that sort of filth.”
Landon was silent again. When he finally spoke, his voice was low.
“Sawyer’s gone missing. Did you know?”
Violet arched an eyebrow. After a pause, she gave a short laugh. “Landon, if you’re investigating me, you must already know that Sawyer and I have been living apart for a long time. We may still be married on paper, but we might as well be divorced.”
The two of them locked eyes for a moment. Then Landon stood up from the couch.
“Aunt Violet, since you’ve said this much, I’ll believe you for now. I just hope you won’t let my grandfather down.”
“I won’t.”
Violet managed a faint smile.
Landon left her office.
