“I’ll do it.”
Snapping out of his emotional daze, Chandler stepped forward and carefully took the wounded man from Zoey’s arms.
Together, they made their way to the makeshift shelter.
Zinnia and Zoey set to work: one cleaned the man’s wounds while the other applied medication. It took a long time, but finally, every cut and bruise was bandaged.
When things finally quieted down, Zinnia turned to Zoey for an explanation of what had happened.
On the day of the bombing, Zoey had received a call for help. She and two other Doctors Without Borders volunteers rushed several miles to a civilian neighborhood. With so many injured and evacuation impossible, the only choice was for doctors to go to them.
It was, ironically, how Zoey and the two others managed to avoid the disaster themselves.
When Zinnia finished listening, she fell silent, her thoughts lingering in the heavy pause.
“Zinnia, what is it?”
“It’s nothing. Just... thinking about some things.”
She shook her head, her gaze drifting to the man standing a short distance outside the tent before returning to focus.
“This man... he’s from Austerland, isn’t he?”
She shifted the topic, studying the man’s face.
He was middle-aged, neither the type to be a businessman in Selvoria nor an engineer stationed here. If anything, he looked like a soldier.
But what would a soldier be doing in Galtaria, and why was he so badly beaten?
“The injuries look like they were inflicted deliberately,” Zinnia remarked.
