Too Good for You: The Ex-Wife You Lost novel Chapter 32

"I just don't like how they think they can get away with everything. Besides, you're our captain now. You should be caught up on stuff like this," Alexis pointed out blandly, her expression still as icy as ever.

But Noelle preferred Alexis' forthcoming demeanor to Hazel's capricious one.

"By the way, are you alright to compete in the championship with those injuries?" Alexis gave a half-hearted shrug. "Don't get me wrong, I don't actually care. I just don't want you to become dead weight for our team."

Alexis' concern for Noelle was obvious despite her efforts to come off as casual and flippant.

Noelle couldn't understand the younger woman's self-contradicting behavior, but she chuckled quietly nonetheless. "Yes, I can compete just fine, but I'm afraid my assistant will need to help me out a lot more than usual."

After all, her fingers had sustained considerable injuries.

Alexis quirked her mouth. She pretended not to have seen Noelle's bandaged fingers, but she loaded a tray of food from the cafeteria for Noelle anyway. She was starting to look like an actual assistant.

The league championship organized by Divine Group would be held in Hardington. The intensive training camp had chosen the participating racers in advance.

On the day before the championship, everyone from camp boarded the bus bound for Hardington with their luggage.

Thunderbolt, Swift, and Flame Speed Racing had sent forth their candidates. Only the top three teams with the highest cumulative scores stood a chance to take part in the championship.

This round, Logan Keller was the coach in charge of dropping the participants off safely at the hotel.

The participants gathered at the entrance of the training camp.

Shannon surveyed the crowd and noticed Noelle was absent. She couldn't resist sneering, "Is Ms. Quinn dropping out of the line-up because of her injuries? As captain of Flame Speed Racing, you think she'd show up by now."

The next second, someone bumped her hard in the shoulder. She turned to glower at the person, only to see Alexis in athletic wear and with her hair tied into a high ponytail.

Alexis looked down her nose at Shannon, her gaze icy. "As captain of Thunderbolt Racing, you don't get to stand here and talk about our squad."

"You—" Shannon's temper snapped, but considering Logan was nearby, she settled for a snort before ordering her team to board the bus.

At first, she thought Noelle would pull some stunt on her, but she was surprised that Noelle hadn't shown up at all.

From the looks of it, Noelle had chickened out.

Noelle hadn't chickened out. She was simply held back to change the dressing on her wounds. Her fingers, which had been bandaged and looked as chunky as carrots, were now free of their dressing and covered in jarring scabs. Anyone would look at those scabs and wince in pain.

The doctor rambled on with his instructions and warnings, but Noelle paid him no mind as she rose to grab her luggage.
