I flushed, but Alexander’s face flowed with pride. I opened my mouth to try to deny one last time, but I could tell from Ava’s determined expression that her mind was set. I sighed, seeing no point in wasting my breath.
Alexander looked down at his hand pointedly, and I laced my fingers through his again. I avoided looking at Ava, but I could feel her burning stare on our hands. When I glanced up, there was a smug expression on her face that just made me blush more.
“So, why did you barge into my apartment on this fine morning?” I asked.
“My mom made extra chocolate chip banana bread,” she explained and held up the dish in her hands that was covered with aluminum foil. “She wanted me to bring you some because she remembered how much you liked it when you came with me to visit her last winter.”
I smiled as I remembered her mom’s kind smile and her kitchen that always smelled like chocolate and cinnamon sugar.
“I was just going to leave the bread on the counter as a surprise for you when you got home since I thought you would be at work already,” Ava continued. “But I’m so glad that I ran into you both.” A wicked glint ignited in her blue eyes.
Ava stepped closer to me and leaned over to place the glass Tupperware on the counter. She leaned closer to me than was strictly necessary. The floral perfume that she always wore invaded
my senses.
“So, did you wake up late because you were up all night?” she whispered.
My eyes widened, and I glanced at Alexander. Thankfully, he seemed too absorbed in finishing off his bacon to have heard my friend’s inappropriate joke.
“Ava, can I talk to you alone in my room?” I asked, my teeth gritting together.
She bit her lip so she wouldn’t laugh when she noticed that I was gripping my fork and knife so tightly in my hands that my fingers were turning white.
“Don’t you want to finish your meal?” she asked, her lips turning up in a smirk. “I don’t want to take you away from your boyfriend.”

Alexander had placed them.
Her face fell in concern. “Oh, no! What happened?”
“I’ll explain in the bedroom,” I grumbled as Alexander helped me stand.

“Please, be careful when you’re walking,” Alexander murmured in my car, making me shiver.
As I limped to the room, I explained how I twisted my ankle at work. I didn’t tell her about how I‘ d been hurrying away from Alexander’s office after making out with him. Some things I just needed to keep to herself.
“That’s awful,” she said as she shut the bedroom door. “Did you go to the doctor’s?”
