Ava leaned forward with a concerned expression. Satisfaction flowed through me because I knew that I truly had her hooked on my story now.
“I also heard another name right before I drifted off into a fitful sleep,” I whispered and met her
eyes.
“What name?” she asked me breathlessly.
I paused for dramatic effect. “Yours.”
Ava shot to her feet and ran to the door. “I’m out of here! There’s no way in hell that I’m staying in a haunted apartment!”
I couldn’t hold my laughter anymore. I fell back into my chair and clutched my stomach as giggles burst past my lips.
Ava’s eyes clouded with confusion, but she soon realized that I had been pranking her this whole time. “You totally just made that story up!” she said. “Your apartment isn’t haunted!”
I wiped tears from the corner of my eyes as I continued laughing. “You should have seen your face! I guess I missed my calling to be an actress. I really got you.”
“That was not funny!”
But I noticed that she was trying her best not to smile.
“Come on. You have to admit that it was a little funny,” I said and patted her knee when she reluctantly sat back down. “I’m just getting you back for barging into my apartment and making jokes about Alexander and me.” I paused as a brilliant idea entered my head. “You know that I was just kidding when I said Alexander spent the night on the couch. This morning, Mike and he came over to my apartment because Mike wanted to use my kitchen to try out a new recipe.”
Ava narrowed her eyes suspiciously, and even before she opened her mouth, I could tell that she didn’t believe me, “Why couldn’t Mike use Alexander’s kitchen?”
“His, um, stove is broken,” I answered, but my voice became ten octaves higher than it normally
was.
“Sure it did.” Ava smiled as she regained her composure. “I totally believe you…just like I believed

you when you were trying to convince me your house is haunted.”
I crossed my arms. “You totally believed that!”

“No, I didn’t.” She shook her head vehemently. “I was just going along with it for your sake. You’re not the best liar, Olivia. I’m afraid you didn’t miss your calling to be some big movie star. I know what’s really going on between you and Alexander. Your relationship with him is anything but pure.”
I couldn’t think of a reply to that, so I grabbed my crutches and hobbled out of the room.
Ava followed me out and grabbed her purse from the spot where she left it on the counter. “Well, I should get going to work.” She smirked as she looked at me then at Alexander. “Just like you two should be doing.” To my surprise, she patted Alexander on the shoulder in a friendly way. “Hang in there, buddy. Olivia will admit that she’s in a relationship with you soon. You just have to be patient.”
