I knew that Alexander thought that I was being paranoid about our coworkers finding out about our relationship, but I wasn’t going to take any chances. Right before Alexander left the car to go up to the office, he cradled my face with his warm hands and gently kissed my lips. This made me flush and avoid his eyes because I became so flustered. But his kiss was so sweet, I couldn’t even be mad that he had kissed me right in front of our office building.

During the entire work morning, I was an anxious mess thinking about the possibility of any of our work colleagues seeing Alexander kissing me in the car. Thankfully, no one treated me any differently, so I assumed that we were in the clear. Alexander acted normally while we were in the office. As the morning went on, the knot in my stomach loosened slightly.

Maybe it was possible that Alexander and I could keep our relationship a secret for a little bit. I just didn’t want there to be any awkwardness if we broke up. It would be hard enough to navigate that on our own without the entire office watching us.

During lunch, Alexander went to a meeting at a nearby restaurant with his father, Neil. He had already given me his car keys so that I could drive to my appointment. The closer that I got to the clinic, the more uneasy I felt.

What if the clinic couldn’t help and I became pregnant with Alexander’s baby? An unwanted pregnancy would make my already complicated situation even more tricky.

Before, at the office, I lied to Gai, saying that I had to go to the physical therapist during lunch so that he could check on my ankle.

My hands were shaking as I parked my car in the clinic’s busy parking lot. I put one of Alexander’s old baseball caps that I found in his car on and slid my large sunglasses onto my face. Honestly, I was afraid that someone would recognize me at the clinic and wonder what I was doing here. I knew that I shouldn’t be ashamed of going on birth control, which I wasn’t.

But I was embarrassed to tell the doctor that my contraception failed last night. I knew that I shouldn’t be because mistakes happened, and condoms probably broke all the time, but for some reason, I just never thought that it would happen to me.

My legs shook as I walked into the clinic. The waiting room was packed–there wasn’t even a seat for me to sit in–and the hospital staff were rushing around their arms full of medical supplies and clipboards.

I sighed as I walked toward the check–in desk. This was going to take a lot longer than I expected I was going to have to call Gai and let her know that I would need to extend my lunch break. As I looked around the crowded room, I realized that I might need to take the rest of the afternoon off That wasn’t an ideal situation, but what other choice did I have? I needed to take care of this now or risk an unwanted pregnancy. Since I didn’t have a gynecologist, the clinic was my only option.

“Olivia.”

My stomach swooped as I turned toward the direction of my name. The deep whisper of my name reminded me of the ghost story I had told Ava this morning, but I already knew who would be standing there before I caught sight of him.

Leaning against the wall–looking far too comfortable than he deserved to look–was Alexander.

“Hello there,” he said and put his hands deep into his pockets. “Fancy meeting you here.”

I put my hands on my hips. “Should I even ask how you were able to find me?”
