Chapter 2
“What’s wrong?”
I start the engine, my voice casual as hell.
Just had a business meeting nearby. Why, is there something you don’t want me to know?”
Damon clearly wasn’t expecting that comeback.
His breathing stops short, and after a few seconds of dead silence, his voice goes all soft and manipulative-that tone he uses when he’s trying to sweet-talk me.
Babe, what are you even saying?”
There’s nothing I’m hiding from you. It’s just that my office is a total mess right now. If you were coming by, I would’ve had someone clean it up first.”
Besides, how could I ever betray you? Feel free to check up on me anytime.”
Hearing this, I’m actually confused.
Emma didn’t tell him I confronted her?
m scrolling through all the evidence while listening to his bullshit excuses.
hree gigabytes of proof, every single day connected to Damon somehow.
Last Valentine’s Day, he claimed he was overseas on business and couldn’t call.
Actually? He was in Iceland with Emma, watching the Northern Lights.
When Dad was in the ICU, I called Damon thirty-seven times.
He ignored every single one because he was throwing Emma a birthday party.
Fine. I trust you. But what’s the deal with that watch?”
When I bring it up directly, Damon actually sounds relieved.
His voice gets closer to the phone, fake intimacy dripping from every word.
Oh that? I had a blood sugar episode at the office and Emma happened to be walking by. She helped me get to the hospital.”
He pauses, then continues:
She stayed with me all night, so I gave her the watch as a thank-you gift. I just forgot to mention it to you.”
Forgot. Right. His memory must be pretty shot.
Not only did he “forget” to tell me about that, he also forgot about the penthouse suite they got at the Ritz that same night.
Where they stayed for three whole days.
laugh coldly to myself.
She’s so thoughtful. Even washed and ironed that black shirt you were wearing when you ‘passed out’ and brought it back the next day, all crisp and clean.”
Damon clearly freezes on the other end, his breathing hitches for half a second before he forces out a laugh.
Yeah, she’s really detail-oriented, that one.”
You’re always overthinking things, babe. You’re the only one in my heart.”
His voice gets closer to the phone, dripping with fake intimacy.
“Once I get through this busy period, I’ll take you to the Maldives for a makeup vacation, okay? Just the two of us.”
That gentle tone used to melt my heart. Now? It just makes me sick.
“Sounds great.”
I watch the neon lights blur past my window, my voice nat as talking about the weather,
“But handle your business first. Don’t let me get in the way.”
“Nothing could be more important than spending time with you. Babe.”
Damon’s voice is desperate to please, but I’m just getting colder by the second.
Not because he’s cheating-but because I can’t believe they’ve been playing me for this long right under my nose.
My grip tightens on the steering wheel.
1 fight the urge to confront him right now.
I want him to admit to his relationship with Emma himself.
Then I’ll destroy both of these pieces of trash.
