Chapter 11
Two large palms took turns warming her hands, trying to gradually restore her body temperature to normal.
But when someone dies, they are truly gone, never to return to life.
One drop, then another, crystal–clear tears silently rolled down her cheeks, wetting Genevieve’s palm.
Yet the chill of her body seeped deeply into Nathaniel’s heart.
Nathaniel felt as if an invisible giant hand was wringing his chest, the pain so intense that even his breaths were laced with agony.
The man who had always been so strong and seemingly invincible was now as fragile as a helpless child.
“Genny, I’m begging you, just look at me one more time, please? It’s all my fault, all because of me. I should have had Elaine give you a kidney sooner. It’s all my fault…”
Nathaniel, filled with guilt, used Genevieve’s hand to slap his own face.
His face turned red from the blows, but Genevieve still could not possibly wake up.
Seeing his deep affection and reluctance, Elaine bit her lip in secret, but only offered a gentle comfort:
“Nate, let Genny go. Please accept my condolences. Genny has already passed away. Let her leave this world in peace. Don’t make things harder for her. She won’t wake up again.”
“You still have a long life ahead of you. If Genny were still here, she would want you to live well, to live for her share too. Please, don’t be like this anymore, okay?”
“Even without Genny, you still have me by your side. Don’t be sad…”
Smack! The hand she reached out to support Nathaniel was coldly slapped away by him.
He turned his head, his eyes dark and fixed on her.
“Elaine, I can’t live without Genny. Without her, I’ll die. Did you know all along that she was

sick and deliberately delayed giving her a kidney?”
“Delaying for a month to experience being a couple was a stalling tactic. Being afraid of thunderstorms and refusing to donate during storms was another excuse. Even today, if nothing had happened to Genny, would you have kept stalling?”
“I didn’t!” Elaine’s face turned pale, but her explanation sounded weak and powerless.
But in truth, she really didn’t know the specifics of Genevieve’s condition.
“Nate, these days I’ve been with you everywhere. I know only as much as you do. I only just found out about Genevieve’s death myself. I really didn’t do it on purpose!”
With Genevieve’s death, Nathaniel was finally and completely awakened.
“Elaine, it truly wasn’t unintentional–because you did it on purpose!” His gloomy eyes brimmed with danger as he gripped Elaine’s neck.
“Tell the truth, Elaine. From the very beginning, did you never intend to donate your kidney to Genny? Have you just been playing with me all along? If it weren’t for your delays, Genny wouldn’t have died!”
“Was the compensation I gave you these days not enough? Is that why you were so unwilling to donate your kidney?”
Nathaniel’s eyes were bloodshot, his voice hoarse and low, roaring in fury.
His hand around Elaine’s neck tightened further, venting the anger in his heart.
Elaine struggled desperately, slapping his arm over and over, two streams of tears soaking his sleeve.
“Nate, I really didn’t, you’ve wronged me. If I had known Genny would leave this world, I would have given her my kidney as soon as possible. But now, it’s too late.”
“If you want to blame someone, blame me. It’s better than torturing yourself. I just worry about you and hope you can live well. I’m sure that’s what Genny wanted when she left, too.”
