Chapter 13
No one knew how much time had passed before Nathaniel, his blood nearly frozen, finally rose slowly to his feet and ordered Genevieve to be placed in the coffin and brought home.
The house was eerily quiet. Even though only one person was missing, it instantly felt as desolate and empty as an abandoned building.
After two days without rest, his body was utterly exhausted, urging him to sleep.
Nathaniel, dazed and absent–minded, lay on the bed like a walking corpse, slowly closing his
eyes.
Though his body was pushed to the brink of exhaustion, he felt not the slightest trace of sleepiness when he closed his eyes.
In his mind, the desperate and hollow look in Genevieve’s eyes as she lay on the operating table that day replayed over and over.
She had desperately wanted to live, and in the past, he too had been willing to give everything for her.
But how had things come to this point?
Nathaniel squeezed his eyes shut, silently drowning in regret.
He curled up, hugging himself tightly, his lean back trembling slightly, revealing his vulnerability.
“Genny, don’t leave me, don’t leave me alone in this world…”
“I’m sorry, truly sorry, I shouldn’t have changed my heart, shouldn’t have kept letting Elaine delay, I’m sorry…”
He pleaded and apologized in a low voice, over and over, as if that could somehow case the pain in his heart.
Sleepless through the night, Nathaniel stared blankly at the brightening sky outside the window, his thoughts drifting far away.
Today was a bright, sunny day.

He had once promised Genevieve that he would marry her on a beautiful, sunny day, vowing never to be separated.
But now, that promise could never be fulfilled.
Nathaniel felt as if a piece of his heart had been brutally torn out, the pain almost unbearable.
At that moment, a bodyguard came to report: “Mr. Weston, one of Ms. Harvey’s kidneys has been removed and is being kept at the hospital. Is there anything else you want us to do with her?”
Nathaniel was silent for a long time before he gradually came back to his senses.
Just as he was about to speak, several hidden photo frames suddenly fell with a crash to the floor.
The glass on the frames shattered, but the images in the photos remained clear.
They were Genevieve’s memorial photos.
Ignoring the shards of glass on the floor, Nathaniel reached out with trembling hands to pick up the photos.
In the black–and–white memorial photo, the girl wore a faint smile, but a deep, indescribable sadness and melancholy lingered on her once warm and sunny face.
She was clearly trying her best to smile, yet it made one’s heart ache all the more.
This photo must have been taken a month ago at the studio. Even then, Genevieve had probably guessed that Elaine would keep delaying and never donate her kidney.
So she had her memorial photo taken in advance, preparing herself for death.
Nathaniel forced down the sobs in his throat, his breathing growing heavier.
Perhaps that wasn’t all–she had even called to reserve a burial plot afterward.
She had long been waiting for the day death would take her from this world, never once considering the possibility that he would have Elaine give her a kidney.
When Genevieve lay on the operating table and saw him leave with Elaine, she must have felt utterly hopeless.
The guilt and regret in his heart surged like a tidal wave, threatening to drown Nathaniel
