She tossed off the covers and slid out of bed. “I’ll go get Sara up.”
By eight thirty, the gynecology ward at St. Mary’s was already busy. Nina was lying in bed, ghostly pale, while the doctor spoke quietly with Theo.
“Why do you think they’re in the gynecology ward?”
“Getting an abortion?”
“Maybe they just got a little too wild?”
“Or was it some kind of group thing?”
Sara spent the entire car ride coming up with the most dramatic scenarios possible.
Patricia just pressed her fingers to her forehead and stayed silent.
“Aunt Patricia, aren’t you the least bit curious?” Sara asked, grinning.
Patricia glanced at her sideways. Honestly, she didn’t care. Her own nights with Oliver were plenty wild.
By nine thirty, the hospital was buzzing. When Nina finally opened her eyes, only Judy was there at her bedside.
The moment Judy noticed Nina was awake, she put on this whole act, bowing and calling her “Miss Nina” like she was some old-fashioned housekeeper from a period drama.
Nina rested against the headboard, taking her time to pull herself together. She sipped some water, waited for her voice to come back, then finally asked, “Did Theo send you?”
“Mr. Newton went to the office. He said he’ll come see you at lunch. Is there anything you want to eat? He’s having the chef prepare something special for you.”
“No need.” Nina really didn’t feel like talking.
Theo was unbelievable. Last night, he’d completely lost it. He’d acted like a crazy person. There was just no reasoning with him.
By ten thirty, Nina was trying to check herself out of the hospital. She’d just made it into the hallway when someone bumped into her. She stumbled, and Judy wasn’t quick enough to catch her.
A stranger steadied her just in time.
Sara, looking effortlessly chic in a Chanel suit with a Hermès bag slung over her arm, had that kind of natural elegance you couldn’t fake.
