Otherwise, why else would this mess still be going on after almost a year—still caught up in their family’s never-ending drama?
Seriously, they’re all loaded. Can’t they take their fights overseas or something? Don’t they get this isn’t some lawless place?
“Mr. Newton says Ms. Martin was armed?”
“Yes,” Theo said.
Brandon looked straight at Patricia. “Ms. Martin?”
Patricia met his eyes, voice calm. “I don’t know what Mr. Newton is talking about. All I know is he asked me to meet, and I ended up getting shot by a sniper.”
She stood up as she spoke, slipping off her coat. Her slim gray top underneath had a long tear on the side, still stained with blood.
Brandon’s eyebrows shot up as soon as he saw the wound.
He wasn’t the only one. Every officer in the room could tell at a glance—that was a gunshot wound.
“This is serious. The two of you will have to stay here tonight.”
Patricia didn’t object. The station had private rooms for questioning, anyway.
They separated them right away.
Brandon rounded up his team and headed straight to the scene. Sure enough—
A bullet was wedged deep in a tree trunk.
Brandon followed the line of fire, scanning the area.
They were by the sea, with no tall buildings anywhere nearby. From this angle, the shooter must have been hiding up a tree.
But a sniper rifle in a tree? That didn’t add up.
“Maybe it was from that security tower?”
“And isn’t it weird that all the surveillance cameras broke at the same time?”
Brandon gave his teammate a look. “Did you forget the huge thunderstorm a few days ago? The news said lightning hit the signal tower here.”
“Let’s go check it out.”
They climbed the stairs to the tower. Sure enough—clear evidence someone had been up there recently.
“Mercenaries, snipers... Life with the rich really is something else,” one officer muttered.
Everyone else just shook their heads, but Brandon looked thoughtful.
