Balance of Light and Shadow (By Chandrea) novel Chapter 222

Conrad POV

I woke up snuggled next to the love of my life. We fell asleep last night in each other’s arms while our wolves purred each other to sleep. I should feel relaxed, but it feels like a weight has been placed in my chest.

I gently reach out in the mate bond to check she is OK and it’s not her. Something is happening in the pack. But the alarms haven’t been raised. I reach out to Liam with a mindlink.

Hey, Liam. You up?.

He gruffly replies, half asleep. I am now. What’s up?.

I ask him. Do you feel that in the pack? I’m struggling to work out what it is.

There was a pause as Liam reached out. Yeah. The weird heavy feeling. Fear maybe. I can’t work it out either.

Lewana started to stir next to me, and her eyes shot open as she sat up. She looked at me with confusion in her eyes. You feel that to.

I nod.

She smiles at me. Guess we have work to do.

We both get out of bed and get dressed for the day. While we are getting dressed, we start mindlinking the gammas, guards, and soldiers to check in and try to find the source. We head down to breakfast, but keep working through the list.

We walk into the kitchen, and everyone stares at us when we enter. They can tell from our expressions that something is wrong.

Arthur is the first to speak. Before you ask, I feel it too, but from what I can gather, it is so faint it is just the Alpha’s and appointed Beta’s who can.

All the girls are staring, along with Beverly and David. They just stare at Lewana and me, confused.

Beverly whispers to Kimberly. What’s going on? Are we in danger?.

Lewana takes over. Beverly. Have you ever gotten a feeling that one of your children was in danger? Not reason or logic. Just instinct.

Beverly perks up instantly. All the time, honey. Just last month, I got the feeling about my oldest boy at night, and it turned out he was panicking about a presentation he had to deliver in the morning.

Lewana graciously smiled at her, but I could see the panic in her eyes. Well, that’s the feeling Conrad and I have, but we can’t work out who is in trouble. We’ve essentially called everyone, but they’re fine, so we’re trying to work out who it is.

Beverly seems amazed at this response, and we are that connected to the pack as family. I just stare at her and think about how much of an amazing mother she is going to be.

She catches me staring lovingly at her and smiles back before trying to get back to work of finding who might be in trouble.

Chapter 222

Lewana asks me. Could it be someone in the camp from Malik’s pack or even Moonfang?.

I will check with guards, but they haven’t taken an oath to us yet, so we wouldn’t be linked, I will check the prison as well.

While we eat, we check all of those places and nothing.

We practically eat in silence, but mine and Lewana’s minds are going into overdrive. It’s now been two hours since we woke up with the same consistent feeling of dread and nothing.

Lewana looks at me, clearly having thought of something. Maybe it’s coming from outside the territory. That could be why it is muted. They might be reaching out through the Alpha King and Luna Queen link, meaning they are not from our pack.

Guess we are going for a walk then.

We get a team of soldiers together and start walking our territory. Murdock and his team insist on coming as well, as they have been patrolling this area since we found out we were being monitored. We both feel it is stronger coming from the open plains, so we head in that direction.

We followed our instincts while we all monitored for any signs of life from around us. It’s Lewana who smells it first.

There’s blood up ahead. Not human or wolf.

We all approach carefully and are greeted with the most disturbing sight I have seen. A tree in the middle of a field with at least fifty dead rabbits hanging from it. They all have ropes tied around their necks in a noose and are placed throughout the tree like a creepy homage to Christmas decorations.

On the trunk of the tree, there is a dagger holding a note. We all know who it is from.

Little Bunny, who stole my pack, I’m coming to take them back. I’ll kill your mate. You’ll meet your fate. Your pups belong to me as payback.

I instantly feel her stomach bond drop through the bond, and I rush to her side.

She pulls me into a hug and whispers to me. How did he get so close and we didn’t notice?.

I stroked her hair to calm her, but as the wind changed, she stiffened in my arms. She pushes me away and starts scenting the air. She lets out a ferocious growl and shifts into Serena as she takes off running at full speed.

I shift and take off after her, followed by all the soldiers.

I call out to her through the link. Serena, stop. If Malik is nearby, we can fight him together.

She snaps back. It’s not him. It’s the traitor.

She eventually reaches a body lying flat in the grass, face down. Serena just growls at him as if he might jump up and attack at any

moment.
