“Olivia’s here!” Adelina Lane exclaimed, her face lighting up as she warmly clasped Olivia Bennett’s hand.
Olivia smiled back, but her gaze soon drifted to Lance Carter, standing a little to the side.
The couple looked stunning together today in their matching outfits—Adelina as elegant as ever, and Lance exuding that gentle, easy-going charm. Seriously, they were the kind of couple you’d see on the cover of a home and garden magazine.
It was no wonder they’d raised someone like Ethan Carter.
“Hey, Mom. Dad.” Olivia nodded politely, greeting them with a natural ease.
“Hi, sweetheart,” they both answered in perfect sync.
Adelina could hardly contain her excitement. “Let’s get inside! Grandma’s been up since sunrise waiting for you.”
Olivia barely had time to reply before Adelina was already whisking her toward the living room.
As Olivia was led away from Ethan, she felt a little uneasy—almost like being pulled off balance. She glanced over her shoulder, searching for him.
Ethan caught her look and quickly closed the gap in two strides, reaching out to take her hand. “I’ll go with her,” he announced.
Adelina, used to her son’s devotion, just laughed and let go. “Still worried I’ll scare her off after all this time? Or is it that you just can’t stand to be away from Olivia for even a second?”
Ethan’s face didn’t change as he replied, “I just can’t be away from her.”
It was a simple statement, but it hit both women like a thunderclap.
Olivia’s eyes flickered, but she said nothing.
Adelina burst out laughing. “Alright, alright. I won’t steal her from you. She’s all yours.”
This was definitely a new side of Ethan, and she seemed to find it hilarious.
Adelina led the way, with Ethan and Olivia following close behind, hand in hand. The three of them chatted as they walked, the air light and cheerful.
Of course, that’s if you didn’t notice Lance Carter trailing silently behind, looking a little left out.
He’d been just about to say something to Ethan, but his son had already dashed off. Left standing there for a moment, Lance realized no one even noticed he’d fallen behind, so he just shuffled after them with a sigh.
