Chapter 106 He Doesn’t Actually Know

“My wife’s injured. I’m here to look after her,” Lewis replied matter–of–factly.

“Don’t give me that crap! What wife? You and Athena are divorced. You have nothing to do with her anymore, so quit acting like you still own her!” Harriet yelled.

“That’s between me and Athena. It has nothing to do with you.”

“How does it not? I’m her best friend. Whatever concerns her concerns me too!”

Harriet’s temper was fiery, and soon, she and Lewis were going back and forth in the middle of the hospital room.

Athena lay in bed, her temples throbbing harder with every exchange.

She wanted nothing more than someone to swoop in and save her. The accident hadn’t broken her, but Lewis’s presence was pushing her straight toward a breakdown.

At last, Athena lost her patience and ordered him to leave.

It looked like Lewis’s plan was to just stubbornly stick around. Still, he was terrified of pushing Athena into hating him, so as long as she was still willing to talk to him, he was willing to bend on everything else.

Harriet threw herself onto the couch with a groan. “Lewis is so shameless! No wonder he kept saying divorce didn’t mean the end. His plan is to cling to you forever!

“He’s already married to Nina, and he still has the nerve to come see you!”

Athena’s mouth twisted into a bitter smile. “If he weren’t shameless, he wouldn’t have done

what he did back then.”

“You’ve got a point there,” Harriet agreed quickly.

Athena let out a troubled sigh. “With him hovering around, I can’t even breathe. Do you have any way to drive him off?”

Harriet’s eyes lit up, and she pounded her chest.

“Don’t worry! Leave it to me–I’ll handle him.”

She went on to fill Athena in about the fallout from the kidnapping and about Teri’s situation.

Harriet shared far more than Zaden ever had.

Right now, Teri was traumatized. She was shutting herself off completely, refusing to talk or interact with anyone.

Harriet sighed heavily. “It’s terrible. Teri was already behind in school because of her emotional struggles. She had just started improving, and now this drags her right back to the beginning.”

Athena’s heart twisted as she listened.

The thought of sweet, obedient Teri reduced to this made her throat ache and her eyes burn. She wanted to see the girl immediately.

“But don’t worry,” Harriet added, catching Athena’s worry. “The doctors are monitoring her closely. Physically, she’s fine. It’s only her mind–she’ll need time to heal.”

Athena gave a quiet nod.

“Get some rest. I’ll go for now.” Harriet leaned down and whispered near her ear, “And don’t stress about Lewis. I’ll take care of him.”

With that, she marched out of the room.

Athena leaned back, her thoughts spinning. She thought of Teri and the Storms, and then it hit her.

Zaden hasn’t taken Teri back to the Storm Estate. He must be staying somewhere else with her because of Beverly.

Athena had no clue what Harriet’s plan for Lewis was.

But since Harriet had sounded so confident, Athena decided to trust her. She only had to hold out for a few more days.

The thought gave her a measure of peace.

But no sooner had Harriet left than Lewis slipped back in, determined to stay by her side as if afraid she might vanish at any second.

He settled himself beside her bed and launched into another attempt at persuasion.

“The Storms are one of the oldest and most powerful families in Vlephia. They care about status above everything else. No matter how much you sacrifice, you’ll never force your way in.

“Zaden’s daughter was kidnapped, and you nearly risked your life to save her. You must’ve done it hoping he’d finally see you differently, right?

“Since you can accept Zaden’s child, why can’t you accept Dion?”
