Alaric sneered again, his voice sharp and dripping with disdain.

“Athena really is something. She had connections all along. If we’d known sooner, we wouldn’t have wasted so much energy fighting for this contract. We could’ve let her handle it from the
start.
“And Lewis–what was he thinking? He divorces Athena, a treasure, and chooses a lousy woman instead. Nina is just a maid’s daughter! It’s embarrassing even to say it out loud!”
Bridget froze, shaken to her core.
Athena knows Mr. Barton?
How could that be possible? Athena had been at home raising a kid all this time. When could she have crossed paths with such a high–profile figure?
“H–how would I have known Athena … ” Bridget stammered, her face flushing red. She couldn’t find the words.
Alaric, sensing her hesitation, pressed the attack. “You didn’t even know your own daughter–in- law’s abilities. Look at the mess she’s caused–our family was dragged into trouble because of her. And thanks to you, we’re all paying the price!”
“Enough!”
Jerome’s voice boomed from the head of the table.
Out of respect, the room fell silent.
His
gaze settled on Bridget, heavy with authority. “What’s done is done. Focus on resolving it, not blaming each other.”
Alaric’s family suggested coldly, “Then have Xavier’s family apologize to Athena and ask her to smooth things over with Mr. Barton. That would settle everything.”
Bridget exploded. “No! Absolutely not!”

She couldn’t humiliate herself by apologizing to Athena.
She had already said plenty of harsh things about Athena in the past. If Athena retaliated, the high society ladies would hear of it. How could she ever show her face again?
“Then what do you propose?” Jerome asked.

Bridget spoke cautiously, “What exactly did Mr. Barton request?”

“They want all the online smear campaigns against Athena removed, and a public statement released explaining the truth,” came the reply.
Bridget exhaled bitterly. “Fine. Then that’s what we’ll do. The contract is the priority- everything else can be handled later.”
“Then that’s settled.” Jerome nodded, making the decision final.
Then his gaze locked on Bridget, warning in a low, serious tone, “Lewis has divorced Athena and registered his marriage with another woman. Leave it be. Don’t stir up any more trouble. Our family can’t handle any more drama!”
Bridget understood immediately–Jerome was cautioning her not to provoke Athena again.
She nodded quickly. “Understood.”
That very day, the Belmonts issued an emergency statement. It instantly ignited an online storm, pushing the scandal between Lewis and Athena into the public eye even more.
When Lewis learned of it, he flew into a rage.
He stormed back to the Belmont estate to confront Bridget.
“Why release a statement like that? Didn’t you tell me to marry Nina to quiet the gossip?”
Now that the Belmonts had made a public statement, all his efforts were meaningless.
What’s the point of forcing me into marrying Nina?
Bridget, who was already at her wits‘ end, finally snapped. “This is all your fault!” she shouted.
“If you’d had any self–control and stayed away from Nina, I wouldn’t be left cleaning up your
mess!
“I don’t even know how Athena got in touch with Mr. Barton, but she convinced him to intervene. And now he’s threatening us with this contract!
“If we don’t do what he says, we’ll lose a ton of money.”
Lewis’s brow furrowed at the mention of Athena knowing Larry.
There’s no way she’d managed that on her own–someone must have helped her.
