Zaden lowered himself onto the couch, and Athena had no choice but to sit beside him. This was not her moment to speak.
“You asked me to come back, so I did,” Zaden began, his voice steady. “I came to tell you something.”
He reached for Athena’s hand and held it firmly. “Athena and I registered our marriage today. She is now Teri’s mother. From this point on, you don’t need to arrange any more blind dates for me.”
Beverly’s eyes widened, her voice rising sharply.
“What did you just say?!”
She jabbed a finger at him, fury flashing in her gaze. “Who gave you the right to marry without my permission?”
“Weren’t you the one who said any woman would do?” Zaden asked evenly.
Beverly was so enraged that she couldn’t sp
eak. Her previous comment had been nothing more than frustration at Zaden rejecting every match she arranged.
That didn’t mean she would ever tolerate a woman she disliked!
Athena hadn’t expected that on the very first day of her marriage, she would be dragged into the Storm Estate to face Beverly’s wrath. It was painfully clear she was unwelcome.
Beverly’s gaze swept over Athena with an icy appraisal before she spoke, her tone cutting. “I do not approve of this marriage. Go get a divorce. Right now.”
The room seemed to be brewing with tension, as though a storm were ready to break.
Athena shrank slightly, her hands twisting nervously in her lap. She felt like she shouldn’t even be here.
She knew her role–she was a placeholder, a puppet that Zaden had married to shut his mother up. She had no right to argue, and this was not the time to do so.
She understood her place perfectly.
Out of respect for Zaden and the promise he had made her, she was willing to endure Beverly’s hostility in silence.

Zaden’s brows furrowed, worry flickering in his eyes as he glanced at Athena. He spoke softly, “Athena, wait for me in the car.”
Hearing Zaden tell her to leave, Athena felt a wave of relief.
She rose and walked out without a word.
Sliding into the car, she took a deep breath, finally allowing herself to notice her surroundings. The last time she’d been here with Harriet, it had been at night. She was in such a rush to find Teri that she hadn’t seen anything.
Now, she had the chance to take it all in.
The Storm Estate radiated wealth and prestige far beyond the Belmonts‘. No wonder Zaden, as their heir, had been held to such high standards since he was a kid.
He wasn’t even supposed to decide who he could marry.
Perhaps Teri was the closest he’d come to defiance.
Athena wondered how things were going inside. Would Zaden and Beverly clash? Would they actually sever ties?
In the living room, Beverly had dropped all pretense. Her face was dark, her voice low and sharp. “I’ll give you two days. End this with that woman immediately. I will never recognize her as a Storm daughter–in–law. If you marry, it should be someone like Ms. Jynn, a proper heiress.”
“I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed. I have no intention of divorcing,” Zaden replied, his gaze steady.
Beverly’s fury only deepened. Right now, she looked like a wild animal, all fired up.
“You… you’ll give me a heart attack!”
“If you stay out of my business, you won’t get mad,” he said earnestly, his words only fueling her
anger.
She clutched her chest, overwhelmed with sadness.
“You’re as heartless as your father!”
Zaden’s lips curved into a sharp, cutting smile. “Dad married you, a so–called lady from a good family. Did that make you happy?”
