Zaden caught her look and smiled faintly. “We’re family. We stick together, no matter what.”

Nina finally caught up to Dion, grabbed his arm hard. “Dion, stop running!”

He struggled but couldn’t break free.

Angry and hurt, Dion wiped his tears and cried, “Mom doesn’t want me anymore! She doesn’t love me, and she won’t even talk to me!”

Hearing him cry for Athena, Nina’s anger boiled over. She slapped him across the face.

It took everything Nina had to hold him still. She yanked him by the ear and snapped, “You ungrateful kid! I’m your real mother–you came out of me! Athena was just your nanny!”

Dion struggled, but he was too small to escape.

Eventually, he grew tired and stopped moving.

Nina forced down her anger and said, “What happened today better never happen again.”

She glared at him. “Athena doesn’t even care about you anymore. You called her ‘Mom‘ in front of everyone and embarrassed me. Do you understand?”

Just then, her stomach growled loudly, snapping her out of it. She realized she was starving.

A little embarrassed, she said, “I’ve been running around all day. I’m so hungry.”

She’d rushed through breakfast that morning, then spent the whole day running around at the competition. Now that things had finally slowed down, she realized she was starving and light-

headed.

The camp provided three meals a day anyway. As long as she picked them up on time, she didn’t need to cook anything herself.
