Odette’s grave was in Loxmere, a small southern town with mild weather all year. A thick mountain forest ran alongside it, and the cemetery they were heading to was halfway up the mountain.

Athena arrived at the base with Tommy leading the way.

After parking, he said respectfully, “Ms. Hall, this is it. We’ll need to hike up the trail.”

“Alright. Let’s get moving,” Athena replied, grabbing flashlights and some gear from Tommy’s car, just in case.

On the way, Tommy told her about Odette’s grave.

Odette had grown up here. Even after marrying into the Storms, she never lost her love for Loxmere. Her final wish was to be buried here, and the Storms had honored it.

Every year, they came back to pay their respects on anniversary of her death.

Athena thought the Storms were surprisingly down–to–earth.

Most wealthy families buried loved ones in city cemeteries–clean, paved, and easy to get to.

But the Storms were willing to fulfill Odette’s wish and hiked up this mountain every year just to honor her.

The trail was overgrown with weeds. Athena could see faint signs that people had passed through, but wild grass had mostly taken over, making it tricky to walk.

“Ms. Hall, be careful,” Tommy reminded her, trailing close behind.

He knew Zaden wasn’t here, but he couldn’t tell Athena that, so he just stayed quiet and kept her company.

The sky was glowing with sunset colors, but Athena’s mind was on Zaden.

With Tommy there, though, she didn’t feel scared at all.

“Hold on, I need to double–check the directions,” Tommy said halfway up, pulling out his phone to check the GPS.

Thinking back on how he had actually listened to Tommy’s ridiculous suggestion and tested Athena, he found it laughable.

He rubbed his forehead, smirking. The game was about to end.

He grabbed his phone and turned it back on. Instantly, a flood of missed calls and texts came through.

Zaden dismissed Harriet and Tommy’s calls without a thought. But when he saw Tommy’s messages, he froze.

“Mr. Storm, Ms. Hall is heading to your grandmother’s grave to look for you. We tried to talk her out of it, but she insisted. She’s really worried.

“Mr. Storm, we’ve arrived at Loxmere and are about to hike up the mountain. The signal is bad up there, but I’ll try to message you.”

That was the last message.

Right now, Athena and Tommy were climbing the mountain just to find him.

Zaden pursed his lips, grabbed his car keys and jacket, and headed out immediately.

Athena and Tommy spent a long time searching for Odette’s grave.

By the time they found it, night had fallen.

The grave was hidden under thick weeds, and no one was around.

Athena pushed the weeds aside and checked the tombstone. Sure enough, Zaden’s name was engraved on the dedication plaque. It was Odette’s grave.
