Athena hadn’t slept a wink last night after everything that happened. She finally dozed off around dawn. When her phone started ringing nonstop, she groggily sat up and answered without thinking.
On the other end came Harriet ‘s excited voice.
“Holy crap! Athena, you really know how to keep secrets! You totally left me out of the loop!”
Athena’s mind was still foggy. It took her a few seconds to realize who was calling.
“Harriet? What are you talking about?”
“Oh, come on! I already heard about it. You and Zaden are dating behind my back! Are we even besties anymore? I don’t care, you two owe your matchmaker a big gift!”
Harriet huffed playfully.
She had already tried to get a present from Zaden, but that didn’t stop her from asking Athena for another one. She was absolutely thrilled.
What could be more exciting than seeing her matchmaking dream come true?
She’d been rooting for Athena and Zaden for so long.
She just knew they’d end up together.
Athena’s mind went blank for a second as everything came rushing back. Hearing Harriet’s words, she couldn’t help but give a bitter little smile.
“Isn’t your birthday coming up? I’ll get you something then.”
She brushed it off casually, though deep down she wasn’t sure she’d even get that chance.
Harriet grumbled, “Seriously? My birthday’s not for another two months! You’re not trying to get out of it, are you?”
Athena replied, “Want me to send you a gift card right now?”
“Forget it! Just give it to me on my birthday,” Harriet said happily. “I’ll throw a party–you and Zaden have to come, and you can give it to me as my cousin–in–law!”
Athena forced a polite smile, then quickly sent a text to Kit.
“Any leads?”

Kit replied almost instantly. “Got some news!”
Athena perked up right away. She said to Harriet, “Harriet, I’ll call you back later. I’ve got an important call.”
“Important? Who is it? Don’t tell me it’s Zaden!”
“No, I’ll explain later.”
Athena hung up and immediately called Kit. As soon as he picked up, she asked, “You said had news. What did you find out?”

Kit said, “From what I’ve learned, Lewis did bring back a kid. But whether that kid is your daughter, I can’t say for sure. The Belmont family’s on high alert right now, and I can’t dig up anything useful.”
Athena’s head buzzed.
She had been holding onto a small bit of hope, thinking maybe Lewis was lying and hadn’t really found her daughter.
But Kit’s words shattered that hope completely.
Athena sat there in silence for a while as Kit’s voice came through again. “Maybe you should take the initiative. Try to make Lewis bring the kid to you. That way you can see for yourself if she’s yours.”
“Yeah, I get it.”
Kit seemed like he wanted to say more, but he figured Athena wouldn’t listen. He just sighed and let it go.
Athena hung up.
She let out a long, quiet sigh, then forced a small smile,
Maybe it wasn’t all bad. At least she knew the baby she carried for nine months was still alive and doing well. That alone was something to be grateful for.
After pulling herself together, Athena checked out of the hotel and went back to her small apartment.
Kit said she should take the initiative, so she needed to be home and wait for Lewis to make his
move.
