Zaden couldn’t see Athena, so he had no idea how tense and troubled she looked right now. He kept his tone gentle as he said, “It’s the weekend, and I happen to have the day off. Teri wants to see you. How about we go to the amusement park? She’s been wanting to go for a long time.”
The amusement park?
Athena bit her lip, hesitating.
Then suddenly, someone else’s voice came through the phone. Teri’s sweet, cautious voice filled her ear. “Athena, can you come with me and Dad to the amusement park? I’ve never been there before.”
The moment Athena heard Teri’s voice, her heart softened.
Before she knew what she was doing, she agreed. “Okay.”
Teri let out an excited cheer. “Yes! Dad, Athena said yes! We can go to the amusement park today! Let’s go!”
Athena blinked and lightly tapped her forehead.
How did she just say yes so quickly?
But since she had already promised Teri, she had to keep her word. Kids were simple at heart, and if you said something and didn’t follow through, they would remember it.
With that thought, Athena took a deep breath, forcing herself to calm down and push aside her tangled emotions.
Zaden took back the phone. His voice was low and warm. “We’ll come pick you up soon. You can get ready.”
“Okay, got it.”
After hanging up, Athena sighed.
Maybe she should just tell Zaden the truth now, while things between them weren’t too serious yet.
It would be better to clear the air early than wait until later when it would hurt more. Today could be her farewell day–one last outing with Zaden and Teri.
Thinking that way made her feel a little lighter.

She tried to ignore the sadness building inside her and told herself not to think too much.
Half an hour later, Zaden called again to say he was downstairs. Athena grabbed her bag and went down.
She opened the back door and saw Teri sitting sweetly in her car seat. When she spotted Athena, her face lit up. “Athena!”
Seeing Teri’s bright smile made Athena’s heart melt.
But at the same time, she thought of her own daughter.
What did she look like now?
Was she as cute as Teri?
Would she like Athena if they met, or resent her for not being there all these years, for missing her entire childhood?
Teri noticed Athena wasn’t responding and tilted her head, confused.
She could sense that Athena seemed upset, so she asked softly, “Aunt Athena, are you sad? Did someone make you unhappy?”
Athena blinked, snapping back to the moment.
She smiled and patted Teri’s head. “No, I’m not sad. I’m really happy to go out and play with you.”
Teri grinned again, her smile returning.
Up front, Zaden glanced at them in the rearview mirror, his expression thoughtful. Athena caught his gaze and smiled faintly. “Let’s go.”
Now wasn’t the time to talk about anything heavy. She’d deal with that later.
Zaden looked away and started the car. The three of them headed toward the amusement park.
Since it was his day off, Zaden didn’t bring his driver, Tommy. He wanted to drive Athena and
Teri himself.
It should have been a happy day, but Athena couldn’t shake the heaviness pressing on her chest. It felt like a quiet storm waiting to break.
She felt as if she were standing trial, with the verdict already waiting ahead of her. As time slipped away, she could only keep walking toward that inevitable end.
