What kind of ridiculous coincidence was that?

The next song was calmer but slow and sad. The rhythm tugged at her emotions. Watching the scenery blur past the window, she felt her chest grow heavy again.

Soon, they arrived at her apartment.

Athena didn’t dare stay in the car any longer, afraid things would get even more awkward. She reached for the door, desperate to get out–but then, a hand caught hers.

Her whole body tensed.

Zaden released her and asked quietly, “Can Teri still come see you?”

Athena froze for a second, then smiled faintly. “Of course. She can come by anytime. I’ll always be the same with her. But you might need to explain things to her. Just tell her that between me and her, nothing’s changed.”

After saying that, she waved at him. “I’m heading up. Bye.”

She shut the door and hurried upstairs, disappearing in seconds.

Zaden sat in the car for a long while, staring up at her apartment window. He waited until her lights turned on, then off again, before finally starting the car and driving away.

That night, Athena couldn’t sleep. She sat in the living room, staring into space.

Everything that had happened lately felt like chaos. She had no idea where her life was heading

anymore.

But she had already made her choice, so there was no point overthinking it.

The next morning, she was jolted awake by the sound of the doorbell. Her head felt fuzzy. She slipped on her shoes and opened the door–only to see Kit standing there.

His hand was still raised, ready to knock again.

The moment he saw her pale face and dark circles, he frowned. “Athena, what happened? You look like something sucked the life out of you.”

Seeing him actually made her feel a little better.

She opened the door wider and said, “Come in if you want. I didn’t sleep last night. I’m exhausted. I’m going back to bed.”

Kit glanced toward her bedroom, his expression teasing and a little suspicious.

Athena instantly caught on and smacked him lightly on the head. “Quit your daydreaming. There’s no one else here.”

He rubbed his head and grinned. “What? I thought you and Zaden had a wild night or something.”

Kit was speechless momentarily.

Athena gave him a look. “Didn’t you used to be against me and him? Why’s that the first thing that comes to your mind now?”

Kit chuckled awkwardly. “Well, you seemed pretty into him. Who else could it be? Don’t tell me it’s Lewis?”

As soon as the name left his mouth, Kit’s face changed.

He stared at her, horrified. “Wait, it wasn’t really Lewis, right? Athena, don’t tell me you went back to that guy. That man—”

“Stop right there!” Athena cut him off. “I’m not hung up on Zaden, and I’m definitely not going back to Lewis. I’m single now. We broke up yesterday. Officially single!”

Kit blinked in surprise, then sighed quietly, like a weight had lifted off his shoulders. “Honestly, that’s probably for the best.”

Athena didn’t catch his muttering. “So, what are you here for?”

Kit straightened up. “Right, business. My dad wants to have dinner with you. He asked me to invite you and try to convince you to come. He hopes you’ll drop the grudge and join him.”

For once, Athena didn’t refuse.

After a moment, she nodded. “Alright. I’ll go.”

Kit’s eyes widened in shock. She actually agreed.
