No one else knew why Zaden suddenly became so hardworking. Only Tommy knew the truth, but he couldn’t tell anyone.

Now that Harriet was here, he finally had someone to talk to. He hurriedly pulled her aside and started telling her about how Zaden had been working overtime since last night.

After listening, Harriet immediately felt a sinking sense of dread.

So it was true that Zaden and Athena had broken up. No wonder Athena went to that matchmaking dinner. She had been wondering why Zaden wasn’t answering his phone. He must be using work to numb himself.

She hadn’t seen him like this in yearsnot since Maya broke up with him.

Harriet didn’t waste any time. She said to Tommy, Let’s go. I’ll talk to Zaden.

Tommy quickly led Harriet to the office. He wasn’t sure whether she could fix the problem entirely, but he hoped she could at least get them out of this miserable situation soon.

When Harriet reached Zaden’s office door, she knocked lightly.

After waiting a while, there was no response inside.

Harriet checked the time and couldn’t help feeling anxious.

When she had left Mistvale earlier, Athena and Kit had just gone inside. By now, they were probably already in the middle of their matchmaking sessions. She needed to act fast. Maybe she should just go in.

Harriet gritted her teeth and made up her mind.

She reached out and turned the doorknob. The door wasn’t locked. Nobody in the office dared to disturb Zaden anyway.

As soon as Harriet opened the door, Tommy instantly tensed up, terrified that Zaden would get angry. He took two steps back to stay away from Harriet so he wouldn’t get dragged into trouble for no reason.

Seeing Tommy’s reaction, Harriet couldn’t help but snort inwardly.

Coward!

The first thing she saw was the back of an office chair. She couldn’t tell if Zaden was there.

Zaden, are you in here?

Harriet quietly stepped closer and saw Zaden sitting in the chair. He was staring out the floor- toceiling window, his face unreadable and his mood impossible to gauge.

But she could tell he was in bad shape.

Zaden, I knocked earlier. Why didn’t you answer?

It took a while before Zaden finally looked up at her. His voice was hoarse as he asked, Is there something you need?

Harriet nervously asked, Did you and Athena break up?

Zaden pressed his lips together and frowned slightly. After a pause, he answered quietly, Yeah.

How could you let it end like that? Didn’t you try to fix it? It must’ve been Athena who brought it up, right? And after she did, you didn’t even try to win her back?

Zaden listened silently, then replied, She said she couldn’t forget Lewis and wanted to get back together with him.

Harriet was left speechless.

She was so mad that she almost exploded.

Is Zaden even thinking straight?

Athena had been hurt so badly by Lewis. There was no way she’d actually get back with him. That must have been an excusethere was no chance she’d repeat the same mistake!

Harriet fought the urge to grab Zaden by the shoulders and shake some sense into him. She forced herself to stay calm and said, Don’t you know how to fight for her? You can’t seriously be saying you don’t even have the confidence to beat Lewis, right?

Zaden didn’t answer.

While sitting in the office, he’d been lost in old memories. He figured that sometimes, effort alone couldn’t change anything.

So when Athena said she wanted to leave, he had agreed without hesitation.

Seeing that Zaden stayed silent, Harriet couldn’t hold back anymore. She stepped forward and said, You must be scarred by what happened with Maya. But Athena isn’t like that woman!
