Hank said with a helpless tone at Fiona’s words, “Mom, what are you even thinking about? I’ve already told you, Alicia and I are just friends. She’s helping us out just because she’s got a kind heart.”
Fiona chuckled. “Hank, I’m a woman too, you know. I can tell when a girl likes someone. Otherwise, what kind of girl would fork over 100 thousand dollars to help out a friend?”
She then asked, “Is her family really rich or something?”
Hank didn’t say anything, trying to figure out how he was supposed to explain all this to Fiona.
Fiona went on, “I can tell she’s from a wealthy family. Hank, you’d better hold on tight to her.
“She’s beautiful and loaded–it’s guaranteed there are tons of guys interested in her. If she’s got eyes for you, that’s an advantage for you.
“Let me give you a little mom advice: don’t just spoil her all the time. You should treat her well, but don’t be too quick to give in, or it’ll be hard for you to keep things balanced with her down the line.”
Hank finally couldn’t take it anymore. “Mom, Alicia and I really are just friends. She paid Sasha’s surgery fee because we have a deal–I’m supposed to help her out whenever she needs me from now on. That’s the condition.”
Fiona laughed. “Oh, please, don’t think I don’t get it! I watch all those TV dramas, you know? Those rich heiresses, when they like a guy but don’t want to hurt his pride, always come up with some excuse for handing out money.”
She went on, “Seriously, what could you possibly do for her to make her drop 100 thousand dollars and even help you find a kidney for your sister? If that’s not love, then what is?”
“Mom, please, just cut back on the TV dramas, and don’t try to pair me up with Alicia anymore. She really doesn’t like me. This is just a deal between us.
“And she’s not a rich heiress–she’s just someone else’s adopted daughter. Now that their real kid came back, they threw her out.
“She’s basically on her own now. It’s honestly pretty heartbreaking,” Hank said seriously.
Fiona was caught off guard. “Wait, she’s not loaded? And she still gave 100 thousand dollars for your sister’s surgery? Now that’s real love right there.”
“She just loaned it to us,” Hank replied. “I’ll pay her back, bit by bit. You and Sasha rest up–I’ll go get you some food.”
As Hank walked out of the room, Fiona muttered to herself, sounding a bit disappointed, “An orphan, huh? That’s kind of a pity. Hank’ll have to hustle even harder from now on–she won’t be much help, I guess.”
But then she started thinking, ‘Still, she managed to cough up 100 thousand dollars all at once, so she’s not exactly strapped for cash. If she really ends up with Hank, that’d be one less thing for him to worry about–no bride’s dowry and the debt’s wiped out. Honestly, that sounds pretty sweet.‘

With this on her mind, she lay back on the hospital bed, a happy little smile curling on her face.

At noon, Alicia headed home and made herself a pizza. It was her first time trying it out, just to see how it turned out. If it tasted good, she could bring some for Sienna in the mornings.
After lunch, she got back to drawing. She kept thinking about the sketch she’d started last night of Charles sleeping, wanting to finish it, but after two hours of struggling, she just couldn’t make it work. Alicia sighed to herself, ‘Guess I’ll have to let this one go for now.‘
She carefully put the sketch away in a box, making sure no one else would find it.
Once she’d stashed the sketch, she went back to working on the painting someone had commissioned from her. She was so absorbed in it that before she knew it, night had fallen.
Once she finally finished painting and let it dry, Alicia snapped a quick photo and sent it off to the person who’d ordered it. He didn’t get back to her right away, but she spotted another notification in her inbox.
It was from the buyer who’d bought her baby blanket. He messaged: [All good, I’ve already confirmed receipt.]
Alicia’s eyes lit up with a smile. She thought to herself, ‘There really are some kind people out there. She messaged back: [Thank you!]
After logging off the site, she went to make dinner. It was already past eight, so she decided to keep it simple with a bowl of oatmeal.
She boiled a pot on the stove, ate it quickly, cleaned up, and called it an early night.
This time around, Alicia knew she had to change her fate, but she also needed to stay healthy. Otherwise, none of it would matter.
Sunday came, and Alicia slept in late, waking up feeling recharged. She still had some leftover pizza from yesterday, so she warmed it up and ate before getting back to her art.
This time, she pulled out the piece she’d made at the Lawrence place and started touching it up. Her mood now was nothing like before, so she added a few details to make the painting feel warmer and more comforting. Once she was happy with it, she put the finished piece away with care.
With not much going on that afternoon, Alicia decided to just chill and do her own thing.
The sun was shining, but there was still a chilly breeze outside, so she closed up the glass roof and walls around the courtyard, basically turning it into her own private, cozy retreat. She sprawled out in there, binge- watching dramas, snacking on goodies, and watering her little garden of flowers and plants.
Spotting one of her pothos plants going absolutely wild, Alicia grinned and hopped online to order a few extra pots right away.
‘Once this thing gets even bigger, I can clip a few stems and grow them in the new planters,‘ she thought, feeling pretty satisfied with her plan. ‘Another fresh batch of pothos, just like that!‘
The laid–back afternoon slipped by, and after an early shower that night, Alicia started scrolling through Twitter. She was waiting, hoping Tiffany would finally drop the bomb about her identity as the Sweetheart

But right now, all Twitter had was a bunch of celebrity gossip–nothing at all about the Sweetheart Queen, much to Alicia’s disappointment.
