Edward studied the sketch for a while, then said with a thoughtful tone, “The concept is nice, but your technique still needs improvement.”
He then explained, “Some lines that should be crisp look blurry. The reflection in the glass is overly detailed -even the expression is visible. It feels a bit too deliberate and lacks subtlety, which takes away some of the artistic depth.”
After Edward’s comments, Gary looked as if all his energy had drained away, slowly leaning back in his chair, feeling disappointed.
Alicia listened to Edward’s critique, a faint smile tugging at her lips as she wondered, ‘Richard’s still the same -always straightforward when giving feedback, never beating around the bush.
‘He figures if he sugarcoats things, people might not get the point, and that’d just be a waste of time.
‘Still, Richard never tried to tear anyone down. No matter what he said, his feedback is always fair and doesn’t make anyone feel embarrassed.‘”
The first artwork was taken down, and the second one was put up.
This one was a watercolor. Janice glanced at it and said, “The second piece is from Ethan Powell, one of our painting majors. Looks like a sunset–the whole sky’s blazing red, really beautiful! But… why is the ground just a pile of ruins?”
The teachers couldn’t help but smile. The watercolor instructor, Gavin Olsen, was quick to jump in. “You can really tell the students worked hard this time. This painting is impressive. There’s such a strong contrast between the fiery sunset above and the ruins below–it really sets a mood.”
Gavin was clearly eager to support his student, so he made sure to get some praise in before Edward had a chance to speak.
All the school administrators turned to Edward, who was quietly writing something on a sheet of paper. For a moment, the entire lecture hall was deadly quiet.
Everyone seemed to be holding their breath.
But after only a few seconds, Edward held up the paper and said, “If I had to score these art pieces, I’d give this one a 7.5, and the first one a 6.5.”
Everyone was waiting for what Edward would say next.
He finally spoke up, “This second piece really has a poetic feeling. I understand exactly what the artist wanted to show–the calm and peace after a fierce battle, but also the lingering sense of isolation and emptiness.”
Ethan was genuinely surprised that Edward saw right through his intentions. ‘Wow, he’s incredible,‘ Ethan thought. ‘I’ve always wanted to be his apprentice, but with just a 7.5, I guess that’s never going to happen.’
Edward continued, “No need to feel down, boy. A 7.5 from me is already a really solid score. Your painting’s impressive, and like your teacher said, you nailed the atmosphere. But your color choices aren’t quite right.

Chapter 107
Have you ever really looked at a sunset? Is the whole sky ever just solid red?”
Ethan was stunned–he finally realized he’d messed up the sunset’s colors.
He had to admit, Edward was spot on.

After the second artwork, the third entry surprised everyone–it was actually two pieces displayed side by side on the big screen.
Janice laughed. “Whoa, our third artist brought not one, but two works–a sketch of modern techniques and a classical–style painting! Let’s check them out!”
The sketch was a portrait, with “Mother” scribbled in the corner.
The classical–style painting showed magpies among the apple blossoms.
Alicia stared at the artworks on stage, already wondering to herself, ‘Which one is Tiffany going to bring up this time?
‘Or maybe she’ll just bring out all the pieces she ever posted online?
‘And what about that one I just submitted earlier? Is it still going to be in the selection?
‘Honestly, if Tiffany brings out all those pieces, she’ll probably stop mine from being presented. The styles are just too similar–people would definitely start getting suspicious.
Deep in her own thoughts, Alicia didn’t notice when the artworks were removed from the stage–she’d completely tuned out Richard’s feedback on those two pieces.
Next up was the fourth student’s work.
Everyone was watching and waiting—even Janice on stage was glancing around as the crew fiddled with the projector. But for some reason, nothing appeared on the screen.
The audience started whispering among themselves. “What’s going on? Why isn’t it working?”
“Is the projector broken or something?” someone asked.
Another one said, “No idea. Do they at least have a spare one?”
Just as everyone was getting confused, Bruce stepped back onto the stage with a smile. “Sorry, everyone. This student brought a lot of pieces, and they’re all pretty big. We’re still moving them up here, so please bear with us for a moment.”
After saying that, Bruce slipped off the stage and approached Edward. “Mr. West, just bear with us a moment. This student brought all kinds of artworks–every style you can think of, and not just one or two. She really admires you and wants you to see everything she’s got.”
Edward’s brows knit together. “Just let me see one or two–there are a ton of people and way too many artworks. We don’t have all day, you know.”

“Come on, check them all out! Trust me, you won’t regret it” Bruce replied, flashing a mysterious grin.
Edward swallowed his annoyance and stayed quiet. After all, he was there at their school to find new talent, so he gotta show Bruce, the director, some respect.
If I actually come across someone with real potential, then checking out a few more artworks isn’t such a waste, he thought.
One after another, the staff carted in framed artworks from backstage–thirteen pieces altogether.
Alicia stared at the flat–laying canvases. Even though none were up on the projector yet, she thought to herself. No doubt about it–Tiffany’s arrived.’
Tiffany had hauled in every single piece Alicia had created at the Lawrence family home over the past three months.
“Honestly, this whole apprentice–hunting contest for Mr. West is just a farce. It’s basically Tiffany’s solo show, and the rest of us are just here to fill the seats,‘ Alicia thought to herself. ‘Guess my work’s vanished from the lineup already. Let’s watch and see what Tiffany’s up to.’
