Maria called out to him, her voice choked with tears, “Adam, you just got back and now you’re leaving again? Where are you even going? I miss you so much. All you ever ask about is Alicia. Do you even care about the rest of us? What’s going on in your head? Alicia is your family. Aren’t we your family too?”
Adam glanced back at Maria and said, “Mom, you’re all here and safe. But Alicia is gone. I have to go see her.”
“Don’t go, Adam,” Maria cried, grabbing his arm. “Tiffany is your real sister. Don’t you care about her at all?”
Adam turned and looked at Tiffany.
Tiffany forced out a few tears and whispered, “Adam, I feel awful too now that Alicia is gone.”
Adam sighed, noticing the sorrow on Tiffany’s face. He gently tousled her hair. “You appear to be the only one in this family who truly mourns Alicia. She was fortunate to have a sister like you.”
Tiffany sneered in her heart, but her face remained as sorrowful as ever. She reached out and hugged Adam, saying, “Adam, you’re really misunderstanding Dad. He loves Alicia too. He’s already planning her funeral. Don’t leave, please. Let’s sit down and figure out what to do next together.”
Adam glanced back at Hugh.
Hugh was calculating, ‘Adam might be stubborn, but he has real talent. If I use Alicia’s funeral as an opportunity to reconcile with him and then offer him some support later, he could really make a name for himself in the medical field. That would be good for the Lawrence family too.
Thinking this over, Hugh said calmly, “You’re Alicia’s brother, too. Let’s talk this out together.”
Adam nodded. “Okay.”
The whole family sat together, discussing the arrangements for Alicia’s funeral.
But just then, one of the servants rushed in, looking totally panicked. “Sir, Madam, something terrible. happened!”
Hugh frowned, “Just talk straight. What happened?”
Andrew chimed in, “Come on. Our family is doing just fine, aren’t we?”
Archie nodded. “Yeah, there’s no one extra hanging around now, and Adam’s back. Having everyone here feels pretty good.”
Adam shot Archie a cold glare.
The servant gulped and blurted out, “The police are here. They got a tip that someone here kidnapped Alicia, and they came with a search warrant.”
Hugh was completely taken aback. He shot up from the couch thinking, ‘How did they show up so suddenly with a warrant?

…
‘Getting a warrant isn’t something that happens overnight. They must’ve planned this ahead of time. Did we make a mistake somewhere?’
Still confused, he rushed toward the door. Right then, four officers strode in, holding up the warrant. “Mr. Lawrence, we received a report that Alicia Lawrence was kidnapped by someone here and is being kept in this house. We’re here to search the premises.”
Hugh frowned. “Mr. Gould, what are you talking about? My daughter Alicia is dead. The investigation’s done, and we have her death certificate. Now you’re saying we kidnapped our own daughter? Does that sound reasonable? Why would we ever do such a thing?”
Kolby Gould smiled calmly, “Let’s sort this out once our search is finished.”
With a wave of his hand, the other three officers spread out through the house and got to work.
“Wait,” Kolby called to his team, pulling out several layout maps and handing them over. “Check every corner with these. Don’t let anything slip by.”
The officers took the maps and started searching.
These maps had actually been sketched out by Charles, pieced together from clues in Alicia’s diary.
Hugh caught a glimpse of the maps and nearly froze. It was a detailed floor plan of the Lawrence residence, even the hidden basement was marked.
‘Where did the cops get these blueprints of our house?‘ Hugh wondered, his mind racing.
He couldn’t figure it out, but there was no time to dwell on it. The officers were already starting to search the house.
Hugh took a deep breath to steady himself and then addressed Kolby. “Mr. Gould, it’s the maids‘ break time right now. Could you call your team back for a moment?
“I’ll have someone inform them to tidy up. We wouldn’t want you guys walking in on anything you shouldn’t see. Some of our maids are quite traditional. If they get upset, it could cause a scene, and that wouldn’t be good for anyone.”
Kolby shot Hugh a suspicious look, but in the end, he called the other three officers back. “Alright, I’ll give you fifteen minutes. Make it quick, Mr. Lawrence.”
Hugh hesitated for a split second.
Hugh wondered, ‘What’s Mr. Gould really hinting at? Is he deliberately giving me a chance to hide Alicia?
Hugh shot Aaron a meaningful glance. Aaron nodded and quietly left the room.
Andrew and Archie exchanged bewildered looks, clearly having no clue what was happening.
Adam, feeling a surge of emotion, stepped forward and asked the officers, “Are you saying Alicia might not be dead after all?”

Kolby, leading the team, shook his head. “We can’t answer that yet. We’ll only know for sure after we search the house.
Adam turned to Hugh, totally at a loss. “Dad, what’s actually happening right now?”
Hugh was so furious that he nearly wanted to smack Adam for blurting that out right in front of the cops.
Adam was just born to give me a headache, Hugh thought sourly.
