Harvey kept his troubled thoughts hidden, nodding in agreement. “She’s been through a lot

As he finished, his phone rang. He checked the screen and saw it was Alicia calling.

With a half-smile, he told Charles, “It’s Alicia.”

Charles hesitated and then said, “Go ahead and answer.”

Harvey answered, “Hey Alicia, what’s up?”

Alicia paused briefly before asking, “Doctor Johnson, are you available to talk now?”

“Yeah, go ahead,” Harvey said as he put the phone on speaker.

Charles didn’t move or say a word.

Alicia’s voice was gentle over the phone. “Doctor Johnson, I wanted to ask you something.”

Harvey checked with Charles, who nodded, so he said, “Sure, go ahead.”

Alicia paused, nibbling her lip before asking, “What kind of soup is best for injured people? Something that’ll help them heal faster… I was thinking of making some soup for Mr. Yates.”

Charles couldn’t help but smile slightly at her question.

Harvey replied, “Any kind of soup can help, such as chicken soup, cream soup, and tomato soup. They’re all beneficial.”

Alicia sounded a bit confused. “So are those soups enough? Do I really need to make clam chowder? I read online that one should eat what helps heal the injury. Shouldn’t Mr. Yates have something that boosts his kidneys?”

Words failed Charles at the mention of kidneys. ‘Why is it always about kidneys with her? Does she really think I have kidney problems or something?’

Harvey caught Charles’ bewildered expression and couldn’t help but laugh. He finally managed to compose himself and teased, “Why are you so fixated on clam chowder for him? Are you worried about his kidneys?”

He shot Charles an amused look. ‘Hold on. Did Charles actually hit it off with her already? And then totally messed it up in bed?’

Charles shot Harvey a look of exasperation.

Alicia went on, “But Mr. Yates injured his waist, right? Isn’t that close to kidneys? Could it affect them?”

It suddenly clicked. Alicia genuinely thought Charles had kidney damage,

Charles gave Harvey a pointed look, signaling him to set the record straight.

Harvey reassured her. “No need to worry. Charles’s kidneys are in perfect shape. They’re 100% healthy All tests came back great. Nothing to be concerned about there.”

“Alright then. I’ll make chicken soup.” Alicia said, sounding a bit embarrassed. “Doctor Johnson, have you eaten yet? Do you want me to bring you some food too?”

Yeah Harvey started, but caught Charles giving him that dangerous look, so he awkwardly backpedaled. “Actually, no, that’s not going to work.”

“Huh?” Alicia sounded confused.

“I’ve got a date with someone tonight, so I’m heading out,” Harvey said with a teasing grin.

“Oh, okay, I won’t keep you from your date then. Bye, Doctor Johnson,” Alicia said and hung up.

Alicia bought a whole chicken and some tomatoes, deciding not to get any pasta.

When she got home at 4:30 PM, she set the chicken soup to simmer first and then got to work making hand- pulled pasta from scratch. After boiling them, she decided not to mix in the tomatoes, worried they’d soak up too much and turn mushy. She rinsed the pasta in cold water, tossed it with a bit of oil, and packed everything neatly into a food container.

An hour later, she filled a thermos with the chicken soup. By then, it was 6:15 PM.

It was getting late, so she had to call a cab and hurry over to the hospital.

When Alicia got to the hospital, Charles had just fallen asleep.

He’d spent most of the day working, and after losing so much blood, he was honestly exhausted.

As Alicia opened the door, she found him lying on his side, his right hand supporting his head. The late afternoon sun streamed through the large window, casting a warm glow on him. Without his usual aloof demeanor, he appeared surprisingly gentle.

The words “Sleeping Beauty” suddenly popped into Alicia’s mind.

She thought, ‘Yeah, he really is Sleeping Beauty. At this moment, he seems almost otherworldly, as if he’s a celestial being who accidentally found himself in the mortal realm.

Alicia zoned out, staring at him for a long while, and before she even realized it, she just wanted to draw him again.

Last time he was asleep, she tried sketching him and never finished it. Now, seeing him like this, all she could think about was wanting to capture him on paper once more.

But she didn’t have any sketchbooks or pens with her. Suddenly, a lightbulb went off in her head. Her phone! She could just snap some pics now and use them as references to draw him later.

‘Damn, I’m a genius,’ she thought, suddenly delighted with herself.

She took out her phone, fired up the camera, and snapped photo after photo.

It wasn’t until she’d finished that she realized she’d left the sound on

When she looked up, Charles was already awake, his intense, dark eyes locking onto her.

Even if he just woke up, his eyes were as sharp and composed as ever, with no trace of drowsiness.

Alicia startled, swallowing hard. “M-Mr. Yates, I brought you some pasta.”

At the sound of a camera shutter, Charles’s defenses instantly went up. He detested the idea of being watched or captured on film without his consent. His eyes turned as cold and cutting as ice. But when he recognized Alicia, he was taken aback, and his gaze immediately softened. A surprising warmth began to spread inside him.

Was she sneaking pictures of me? Does that mean… she actually likes me?’ Charles wondered, a mix of doubt and hopeful curiosity in his heart.

He pretended not to hear her and simply held her gaze with his deep, enigmatic eyes, his tone low and steady. “Were you just snapping pictures of me?”

Alicia clutched the thermos a little tighter, looking like a kid caught red-handed. “Just one…” she said softly.

Charles’s lips tugged up in a soft, warm smile. His voice was low and gentle as he asked, “Why did you take my picture?”

Alicia bit her lip, a bit flustered. “I… I wanted to draw you, but you never have much free time, so I figured I’d snap a photo to use as a reference later. Didn’t you say you wanted a portrait of yourself every month?”

A wave of disappointment washed over Charles. ‘So it’s really just about that silly thing I mentioned earlier? She doesn’t even care about drawing me in person, just wants a photo to use as a reference?’

The more he dwelled on it, the worse he felt. Without meaning to, his voice came out colder. “I’ve got plenty

of time.”

Alicia stared, totally thrown off. “What?”

‘Is this what he’s hung up on?’ she wondered, half amused, half bewildered.

Charles added, “I don’t like people taking pictures of me. You should delete it.”

Alicia, feeling like she’d been caught red-handed, muttered softly, “You look really different when you’re asleep. Actually, I thought you looked kind of gorgeous…”

When Charles caught that last bit, a subtle warmth flickered in his chest. He reached out a hand, a hint of a smile appearing as his tone softened, “Let me see.”

Alicia hesitated, a little embarrassed, but she unlocked her photo gallery and passed her phone over to him.

Charles glanced at Alicia’s phone, a crooked smile forming at the corner of his mouth. “Nice shot. You can keep it. But next time you draw me, don’t just rely on a photo, okay?”

Alicia gave a dry, awkward chuckle, quickly shifting gears. “Alright. Would you like to start with pasta or soup?”
