Maria came home in a foul mood, but the moment she stepped inside, Hugh hurled a cup at her.

The cup shattered at her feet; she leapt back with a start and fixed Hugh with a glare as he lay slumped on the couch. “Hugh, what’s gotten into you? I could have been hit!”

His temper only flared hotter. “You dare ask what’s wrong? The company is in shambles, both our children need bailing out, and now you’re here adding to the chaos.”

Maria, still clueless about what had set him off, couldn’t help but snap back. “Adding to the chaos? How am I making things worse? I know you’re swamped with the company and stressed about the kids, but I’m trying to help you out! How am I the problem here?”

Hugh let out a cold laugh, pulled out his phone, opened up Twitter, and thrust it toward Maria. “So this is your idea of helping out? Huh?”

His voice shot up at the end, making Maria jump. She picked up the phone with trembling hands, and when she saw what was on Twitter, her face went ghostly pale. “Who… who posted this?”

“You don’t need to worry about that. What I want to know is: Why did you go looking for Alicia?” Hugh demanded.

Maria burst into tears. “It was for Tiffany and Aaron! I just… I heard that if the victim doesn’t press charges, it all goes away… I thought I could fix it…”

“Heard from who? Who told you that?” Hugh pressed, his voice sharp.

“It… it was Tiffany,” Maria finally gave in, unable to hold out against Hugh’s questioning.

Hugh gave a cold snort. “I knew it was her.”

Honestly, the plan to get Alicia to drop the charges might have worked. The fatal flaw was sending Maria to do the dirty work. That single miscalculation took a bad situation and made it explode.

Now, the whole talk between Maria and Alicia in that café was caught on video and blasted all over the internet.

Everyone online was roasting the Lawrence family, saying they were basically pushing their adopted daughter to the edge, feeding off her pain for their own benefit.

With the way things blew up, getting Alicia to drop the charges was now completely out of the question.

No matter what kind of methods Hugh tried now, people would just say the Lawrence family was strong- arming Alicia–and the cops might even dig into it in the first place.

do now?”

“It doesn’t matter who posted it now. What matters is, next time you want to do something, can you at least talk it over with me first?” Hugh was so fed up he could barely get the words out, letting out a long sigh.

Maria immediately nodded. “Got it, I’ll check with you first from now on. Hugh, just think of something, please–try and help Aaron and Tiffany out.”

Hugh took a long breath. “I’ll send Tittany overseas for a while, let her keep her head down. As for Aaron, there’s nothing I can do for him now. He only has himself to blame. If he’d just stuck to saying the whole thing with Alicia was a stupid prank, I could’ve pulled some strings. But he went and confessed everything, so now he’s just got to deal with the mess himself.”

Maria burst into tears as soon as she heard that. “Hugh, are you telling me Aaron’s actually going to end up in prison?”

Hugh’s frustration boiled over at the sound of her wailing. “Who do you think is to blame? He did this to himself!” he snapped, his voice rising. “You idiots are driving me out of my mind. All you do is sit around and cry–cry, cry, cry! Is it any wonder our kids keep failing with a mother like you setting the example?”

Being called an idiot by her own husband shattered Maria. Her sobs intensified, dissolving into helpless, uncontrollable weeping.

Hugh couldn’t take it anymore; her crying grated on his nerves. He shot straight upstairs, not bothering to say another word.
